Dear Baroness Laing,
I trust this finds you well. Apologies for writing during recess but Leadbeater Assisted Suicide will be debated early in the House of Lords on 12 September and the Antoniazzi Abortion to Birth in the new session. I am asking you to vote against them in the Lords
Both issues were voted through the House of Commons in June. The Antoniazzi amendment to the Crimes and Policing Bill will make legal abortion up to birth as clause 191 states:
“no offence is committed by a woman acting in relation to her own pregnancy at any state of gestation…using pills or any other method..including just before birth.” This and the Leadbeater Bill represent the darkest month in the history of our nation. If passed by the House of Lords they will change our country for the worst.
Conventionally medicine is guided by the Hippocratic Oath “Do no harm.’ If Leadbeater becomes law the norm of doctor/patient relationship will change irrevocably: doctors will now be expected to become killers and the relationship with both will harm society and destroy every norm known to date. Doctors will be simultaneously killer and healer. Horror.
The nation’s relationship with death will also change: death will no longer be the natural end of life. We will be soon made to “choose’ when and where this takes place. Vulnerable, sick, old, handicapped will soon be encouraged to consider themselves “burdens” and subjects for state assisted killing, not palliative care. The drive to this end and rapid expansion of numbers can be clearly seen in ALL the countries that that have gone down this eugenics road: Canada, Holland, USA, Belgium. These countries are like us liberal democracies, Canada has King Charles 111 as head of state.
In Canada 43% seeking state assisted suicide (MAID) do so because they see themselves as “burdens.”
Holland is currently killing children up to the age of 12. These deaths are non voluntary, driven by parent and doctor eugenic perceptions. At 16 children can independently request euthanasia. without reference to their parents.
Leadbeater’s Bill is so extreme that the mainstream press last week reported King Charles” ongoing”dark night of the soul experiene” ( first referenced Daily Mail 14 November 2024)
at the thought of giving it royal assent. The King is so right as alarm continues to grow about this private Members Bill, evidenced by the majority in the Commons falling from 58 at Second Reading to a wafer thin margin of 23 in June at Third Reading.
Think how unconsulted the Bitish public have been: the matter was not on the Government Manifesto; there was 12 hours of debate in the Commons. contrast this with the debate on fox hunting in 2004 where 700 hours of Commons time was devoted to this matter.
Going further back 86 years we fought Nazi tyranny which included state killing of “useless eaters” Surely we do not want to emulate Nazi policies in 2025? Since 1969 we have not executed the most vile criminals for reasons of compassion. We need to show the same compassion to our ill, old and vulnerable citizens if we are to remain a civilised and caring nation. Do you agree Baroness Laing?
Please also vote against Antoniazzi Amendment, 191, of the Crimes and Police Bill. Abortion to birth was not a Manifesto matter. I imagine you are appalled at the thought of a fully formed baby being killed because another fully formed human, albeit older, has decided to kill the this vulnerable human at birth. Think Southport last year there is no death sentence for the perpetrator of this unspeakable crime so how can we make legal the killing of our most innocent citizens up to their birth. Surely, this is unconscionable? What adds additional alarm to the vote in the Commons it took place after less than ONE hour of debate. How can this serve the nation’s interests or do justice to the gravity of the matter under discussion?
A recent poll showed:
5% of population supports abortion to birth.
17% of population believe abortion should only take place so long as a baby does not feel pain. At 13 weeks pain is experienced in the womb.
16% of population consider abortion acceptable when a baby cannot survive outside the womb. Babies of 20 weeks now survive and 60% of premature babies survive at 24 weeks.
The question arises do the MPs who voted for Antoniazzi Amendment actually know these medically attested realities?
Are they aware of the health dangers to women undergoing late term abortions? A government report for 2017-2021 showed that late abortion complications in clinics increased 160 times for abortions at 20 weeks and above, compared with abortions under 10 weeks. The complication rates are likely to be higher for women performing home abortions without medical supervision, and well beyond the current 24 week time limit. Such later decisions could be triggered by sex selection considerations. Baroness Laing can it really be acceptable in Britain today to visit such potential trauma on the nation, while adding additional alarms by sex selection drivers? Are the MPs or swathes of the electorate even aware of these realities developing should Antoniazzi’s Amendment become law?
There is a real danger that women will be coerced into abortions right up to birth, allowing unscrupulous providers to use whatever methods they wish and provide abortion medicines with virtually no checks whatever, knowing that it is almost impossible to prosecute them under the law, if it comes to pass. Baroness Laing I am sure this is not a situation that you would be comfortable with. Is it possible that the MPs who voted for this amendment were, after one hours discussion, unaware of these issues of immediate danger posed to the health of countless women risking later abortions if Antoniazzi becomes law?
Neither Leadbeaters Bill, nor Antoniazzi Amendment were ever part of the current government’s Manifesto. As such the House of Lords has the right to vote it down, and I urge you to take the opportunity to do so. I should be grateful for hearing your intended vote. Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
