Thirty Third Sunday of the Year 2020

Dear Friends in Christ

As we continue with this second lockdown, we heard this week that over fifty thousand people from the UK have lost their lives to this terrible disease. But we also heard that there is some hope on the horizon, with the possibility of a vaccine that could start to be given very soon. This has been a tortuous year, and everyone’s lives have been affected by this Pandemic. Keeping safe is fundamentally at the heart of everyone’s lives. We should all be aware of each other in preventing the spread of this disease. All the restrictions, no matter how difficult they are, are in place to preserve life. Please continue to be vigilant! During this lockdown, I will continue to livestream Holy Mass at 10.00am each day Monday – Saturday. There will be a Vigil Mass at 6.00pm on Saturday evening, and 11.00am on Sunday morning. Each day Monday – Friday we will livestream the recitation of the Holy Rosary for the ending of this Pandemic. We do this in conjunction with all parishes up and down the country, united in faith and prayer.

SIGNS OF HOPE: There are certainly seeds of hope for the future in the new vaccine. But we also must have things to look forward to; Christmas looms fast upon us. It’s always a wonderful time for families; children get excited, and hopefully as Catholic Christians we share this faith with all around us. This is one of the reasons I decided to continue in our preparations for Christmas with a Grand Draw. I know it would have been impossible to have our annual parish Bazaar, but to do something special in preparation for Christmas shows some semblance of life carrying on, despite the difficult circumstance s we all face. Please be supportive of our Grand Draw this year.

FEAST OF ST. EDMUND OF CANTERBURY: Patronal Feast. Monday 16^th November. St. Edmund of Abingdon, also known as Edmund Rich (circa 1174 – 1240) Appointed Archbishop of Canterbury 1233. Died 1240 Soisy-Bouy, France. Buried Pontigny Abbey, Burgundy, France. St. Edmund was an extremely holy man, and was canonised 1246. He is the Patron Saint of our parish here in Loughton. We ask his intercession on Monday 16^th for all our intentions.

CHRISTMAS HAMPERS: Some of our Bazaar Committee Members have suggested that we make up some beautiful Christmas hampers. If parishioners are not in a position to be able to contribute one of the larger prizes, if you could contribute items for hampers this would be wonderful: Bottles of wine, Bottles of Prosecco, boxes of biscuits, Shortbread, Boxes of mince pies, Jars of jam & marmalade, Jars of pickles, Jars of coffee, Tea, Christmas Puddings, Christmas Cakes, Boxes of Chocolates & Sweets, Candy Canes, Selection Boxes, Chocolate Oranges, Bags of Crisps, Popcorn Crackers for Cheese, Box of Dates, Turkish Delight, Christmas Nuts (Walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazilnuts). Etc. Depending on how much we get in, we’ll make as many hampers as possible! During the week, you can leave items in the box in the porch 10.30am – 11.30am; also I will leave a box at the Presbytery Front Door, and one in my Garage at the back of the Presbytery. GRAND CHRISTMAS DRAW: This is an additional appeal for GRAND DRAW PRIZES OR MONEY DONATION PRIZES. We need lots of good prizes. Could anyone donate a Colour TV? (See list in previous notice, page 2) Also, we hope to make up as many Christmas Hampers as possible with Christmas goodies; also toiletries to make up Toiletry hampers. No matter how small an offering, it will be used this year. GRAND DRAW TICKETS WILL GO OUT ON THE WEEKEND 5^TH/6^TH DECEMBER. The Draw will take place on Sunday 19^th December after the 11.00am Mass. Perhaps what you would have spent if we had had a Bazaar, you can spend on Draw Tickets. As you know this is our only Fund Raiser each year.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: Our RCIA programme continues this week on Thursday 15^th October at 8.00pm unfortunately, due to the latest Government guidelines we cannot meet together in the presbytery; therefore, there will be a Zoom meeting. Theme: The Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please pray for our enquirers. This programme is a systematic study of all aspects of the Roman Catholic Faith, with the view of the enquirer deciding to receive the Easter Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation & the Holy Eucharist. LEAVING WINDOWS OPEN: It may feel a little uncomfortable at times in colder weather. But Government guidelines state that there should be plenty of ventilation in enclosed spaces. Some windows and the doors will remain open in the Church during Sunday Mass. Please dress accordingly, with warm topcoat, gloves and scarf. Keeping everyone safe is our top priority!

ST. JOHN FISHER CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL: (School Applications for September 2021) will not be offering any on-site tours to view our school this year. Instead we have prepared a virtual tour. Why do we pray the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy?

So, how did it all start?

God’s mercy is proclaimed in the Bible in the New and Old Testament. In 1930s Jesus appeared to St Faustina Kowalska, a simple Polish nun, and asked her to proclaim God’s mercy. Jesus’ words: “[…] I desire that the whole world know My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy.” – (Diary, 687)*

Why the image?

Jesus ordered St Faustina to paint a picture, as she saw Jesus, and with the words “Jesus I trust in you” written on the image. As St Faustina could not paint, her spiritual director enlisted a professional painter to paint the image. The Lord said: “ […] I desire that this image be venerated, first in your chapel, and then throughout the world. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over its enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I Myself will defend it as My own glory.” — (Diary, 47-48)*

Why pray the Chaplet?

Jesus instructed St Faustina to pray for the whole world and especially for the sinners in the words of what we now know as the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy. Jesus said to St Faustina: “My daughter, encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given to you. It pleases Me to grant everything they ask of Me by saying the chaplet […]” – (Diary, 1541)* and “The Lord’s Promise: The souls that say this chaplet will be embraced by My mercy during their lifetime and especially at the hour of their death.” – (Diary, 754)*

Why 3 o’clock?

This is the hour at which our Lord died. In his appearances Jesus said to St Faustina: “At three o’clock, implore My mercy […] and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion, […]. This is the hour of great mercy for the whole world. […]. In this hour, I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of me in virtue of My Passion…” – (Diary, 1320)*

NATIONAL YOUTH SUNDAY: 22^nd November. Next weekend is the Feast of Christ the King, and the weekend where we especially honour and celebrate the place of young people. St John Paul II said, “In the Church of today, you are the hope of tomorrow” and Pope Francis speaks about the “creativity and audacity” of the young. Since March our Brentwood Catholic Youth Service has offered online opportunities for prayer and service, in wonderful ways, and reaching thousands of people. PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS: Due to Governmental guidelines on social distancing, at present we are only able to accommodate 125 persons maximum at each mass. Chrstimas tends to be a time of year when more people make a visit to Church. In a bid to cope with numbers, I will add some additional masses. There will be no children’s mass this year; and I would ask all parishioerns to seriously think about masses they attend. Please don’t all turn up for the first mass, because we will have to turn away parishioerns once we have reached our capacity of 125.

BAPTISMS: We have been given permission to resume the Baptism of infants in our churches. At present all baptism have been suspended until after 2^nd December, and then, once again we will have to review the situation in accord with Government guidelines. 32nd Sunday of the Year 2020

This week we began our second lockdown in England. It’s quite heart-breaking and soul-destroying going back to square one again. But as the autumn and winter approaches, we are always very conscious of sickness and deaths through flu. With Covid-19 also part of the equation now, the Government experts have presented the science that precipitates the necessity to protect people’s lives through this second lockdown. Hopefully, the public will take notice and abide by these restrictions. Keeping safe and well during these winter months is so important. Obviously, since the summer, when people lowered their guard, and when the weather was so good, we were able to spend a lot of time outside. But now, we need to be vigilant; following the guidelines is vitally essential in preserving our health. No one is invincible! As you know, there are no public or organised Services in the Church, but I will live stream mass everyday Monday – Saturday at 10.00am. Keeping connected through social media is so important. It gives us the opportunity, as difficult it may be, to express our faith in the solitude of our homes, but at the same time, knowing we are all connected in Christ through this act of worship. In the first lockdown, it was incredible to hear from so many of you, saying it was a real lifeline during a very difficult time. Hopefully, we can do the same this time. Sadly, many people did not return to church when we opened last July. I pray for our Parish daily; and I want you to know that I offer my rosary for you all daily. We really do need the Lord at this time; our faith cannot be put on the backburner. I would like to think that during these months we have had the opportunity to really discover the importance of our faith in our lives; not as something that we just tag on to our existence, but something that is central and key to our lives. DURING THE LOCKDOWN: The Vigil Mass for Sunday will be celebrated at 6.00pm on Saturday Evening. Sunday Mass will be at 11.00am.

TODAY IS REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: The traditional Remembrance Sunday Service on Sunday 8^th November will now be an online Service with all the various Christian Churches in Loughton taking part. Each Church has recorded a part of the Service, and this will be transmitted at 12.15pm on Remembrance Sunday. The theme this year ‘Remember at Home’. It’s important to know that Remembrance Sunday is not cancelled but just being done in a different way. Obviously, the Pandemic, to a certain extent, is dictating all our lives at present; but it’s always important to remember all of those men and women who died during the two Great Wars and all the subsequent conflits and wars.

LATEST GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES: Every week I receive updates to the latest situation re. Covid-19 guidelines. The Health & Safety Office at the Diocese of Brentwood has sent us a memo about the winter and the turning on of heating in our churches. As the temperatures slowly begin to decrease, I would suggest to all our parishioners that you wrap up really well with a topcoat and scarf. The scientists have assured us that ventilation is vital and necessary with this virus being so virulent. We are really fastidious about the cleaning and sanitisation of our seats and benches after the church has been used. I’m truly grateful to our faithful stewards for this wonderful work. There are good health & safety procedures in place at church.

NOVEMBER – MONTH OF HOLY SOULS: In the Catholic Church, November is traditionally the Month of the Holy Souls. It is when we remember in a very special way all our deceased loved ones; relatives, friends and benefactors. There are November Deceased Envelopes available for all parishioners. If you would like to remember your deceased loved ones, please make a list and place it in the envelope with your Mass Offering. Holy Mass will be offered each day throughout November for our Holy Souls; and a decade of the Rosary will be prayed at the end of each weekday mass, with the additional prayers for the deceased. EPPING FOREST FOODBANK DONATIONS: Thank you to all parishioners who continue to generously donate items for the Foodbank during these difficult times. The Foodbank are truly grateful for the generosity our parish has shown throughout the pandemic and our donations are still needed desperately as more and more people in our community are finding it hard to make ends meet. Basic staple items are always welcome including the unbranded supermarket basic ranges which can make your generous donations go even further. YOUR WEEKLY OFFERTORY DURING THE LOCKDOWN: Manifestly, as we are in lockdown for the next month, once again, the weekly offertory is essential to keep our church functioning. As we are open for daily pray for an hour, the heating is on. Like everyone else the bills still keep coming in. I appeal to all our parishioners to use the above methods for your offertory. They are easy and very quick. Or, just put your Weekly Offertory envelope through the Presbytery letterbox. I thank you all for your ongoing support of the parish during these very difficult times.

PARISH REPOSITORY: There are a variety of beautiful Christmas cards, Advent Calendars, Cribs, Candles, Books, and other items in the porch of the Church. During the lockdown the Church is open each day between 10.30am – 11.30am, if you wish to purchase cards or gifts there is Repository money tin to receive the proceeds of your purchase. This will be emptied at the end of each opening of Church. Thank you!

THINKING AHEAD TO CHRISTMAS: It is presumed that the Churches will open again on the 2^nd of December after a month’s lockdown. Obviously, by then we will have already celebrated the First Sunday of Advent. Advent, the Holy Season of preparation for Christmas is the Church’s way of celebrating those key moments in Our Lord’s life. This year will be very different all over the world. This Pandemic has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, and creates an element of fear in many people. But Advent is still a Season of Hope & Joy; the Saviour will be born again into our lives at Christmas.

Due to social Distancing in all of our Churches, with alternate benches being cordoned off, we can only accommodate approximately 125 people in the church at one time. I have been thinking about our Christmas Masses. Usually we have a family mass with a children’s Christmas Tableau, unfortunately this year, this will not take place; but there will be an added surprise for the whole parish to delight in at all of our Masses, which you can see at Christmas.

Masses will continue in the same manner as present; unfortunately, there will be no singing of Christmas Carols, and our masses are now much shorter than usual. I have decided to celebrate 4 Christmas Eve Masses: 5.00pm, 7.00pm, 8.30pm & 10.00pm. Christmas Morning Masses 9.00am, 10.00am & 11.00am. I appeal to all of our parishioners to seriously think about these masses, and kindly do not all turn up for 5.00pm, once we have reached capacity of 125, people would have to be turned away until the next mass. This is the only way I can think of around the numbers who attend at Christmas. Please understand this is going to be a pretty heavy schedule for me personally!

Dear Friends in Christ

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of All the Saints. Remembering all those men and women throughout history who have borne witness to Jesus Christ. We have the first martyrs of the Church, the Apostles, and the Martyrs of the Reformation, and all who have given their lives for Jesus. We have all the Founders of Religious Orders; men and women religious; priests and nuns who witnessed to Christ through the holiness of life. We have the many lay men and women, faithful to the Gospel of Jesus. We have our own deceased loved ones, relatives, friends and benefactors, whom we believe join the Company of Saints. It is our aspiration also one day to join this great company. Let us ask for their Intercession today as we continue along the Journey of Life and Faith. NOVEMBER – MONTH OF HOLY SOULS: In the Catholic Church, November is traditionally the Month of the Holy Souls. It is when we remember in a very special way all our deceased loved ones; relatives, friends and benefactors. There are November Deceased Envelopes available for all parishioners. If you would like to remember your deceased loved ones, please make a list and place it in the envelope with your Mass Offering. Holy Mass will be offered each day throughout November for our Holy Souls; and a decade of the Rosary will be prayed at the end of each weekday mass, with the additional prayers for the deceased. Please return your Deceased List Envelopes by All Souls Day 2^nd November. There will be three masses that day. 10.00am, 12.15pm & 8.00pm. See the source image

As Covid-19 continues to spread throughout the world; there appears to be no immediate end to this Pandemic. We all must be vigilant. The Health and Safety of everyone is of utmost importance. And each one of us should take responsibility to ensure that we follow the Governmental guidelines. Our Diocesan guidelines are also helpful to each of us who attend Weekly Mass. Hand sanitisation, social distancing, wearing a face covering; cleaning the church after every Service. Please continue to co-operate with these agencies.

PARISH BAZAAR THIS YEAR: With the uncertainty regarding the Covid 19 Pandemic, I have made an executive decision not to have our annual Parish Bazaar this year. Instead, it would be good to have a ‘Big Grand Draw’ with really good prizes, (about 20 prizes). If anyone would like to donate really good prizes for the Draw these will be gratefully accepted. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: The traditional Remembrance Sunday Service on Sunday 8^th November will now be an online Service with all the various Christian Churches in Loughton taking part. Each Church has recorded a part of the Service, and this will be transmitted at 12.15pm on Remembrance Sunday. The theme this year ‘Remember at Home’. It’s important to know that Remembrance Sunday is not cancelled but just being done in a different way. Obviously, the Pandemic, to a certain extent, is dictating all our lives at present; but it’s always important to remember all of those men and women who died during the two Great Wars and all the subsequent conflits and wars.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: Our RCIA programme continues this week on Thursday 15^th October at 8.00pm unfortunately, due to the latest Government guidelines we cannot meet together in the presbytery; therefore, there will be a Zoom meeting. SEMINARIANS FROM THE NORTH AMERICAN COLLEGE: I was contacted a couple of days ago by one of the Seminarians, who informed me that the whole College has locked down, as several students tested positive with the Covid-19 virus. The whole college is now quarantined, with no one allowed outside of the campus. Manifestly, they believe that there are more students with the virus, who have not yet been tested. They ask for your prayers. Our own Seminarian, Frank Westcott at Oscott Seminary in the West Midlands, continues with his studies and is doing well. The College should have had half-term, but the Rector decided in light of the virus, to not send the students back home for Health & Safety reasons. Pray for all!

Just a reminder; I approached our Diocesan Health & Safety Officer this week about the reopening of our parish hall. The Diocese have decided that there are so many stringent government rules and regulations attached to the opening of halls, that for the time being the diocesan policy is that they remain closed. This is extremely disappointing for our Uniforms Groups in the parish, who have worked so hard with the Scouting organisation in strategic planning for groups of children to meet. But the diocese has stated that outside of School Education of children we cannot gather in our halls. Unfortunately, this also means that we are unable to commence First Holy Communion & Confirmation Programmes, which I was hoping to start after Christmas. These are unusual times, and we all must employ as much patience as possible. I don’t know what ‘Normal’ is anymore. PARISH REPOSITORY: As we enter the month of November, you may have noticed in the Parish Repository a large selection of Religious Christmas Cards. I know this has been a very difficult year for everyone, but we have to keep before us Christmas as a great source of hope. We can just forget about that even which changed the whole course of human history. People may not be thinking about Christmas at present, but to send or receive a religious Christmas card is very much a sign of hope. There are other Christmas gifts and items also, Cribs, Advent Calendars, Christmas Books for children, Candles, and many more things. LATEST GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES: Every week I receive updates to the latest situation re. Covid-19 guidelines. The Health & Safety Office at the Diocese of Brentwood has sent us a memo about the winter and the turning on of heating in our churches & parish halls; they are awaiting instruction from the Government, and within the next few days I should have a clearer indication as to what we will be able to do. In the meantime, as the temperatures slowly begin to decrease, I would suggest to all our parishioners that you wrap up really well with a topcoat and scarf. The scientists have assured us that ventilation is vital and necessary with this virus being so virulent. We have good health & safety procedures in place at church.

Thirtieth Sunday of the Year 2020

Dear Friends in Christ

Over the past seven days we’ve seen even more parts of the country having to adopt stricter measures and guidelines from the Government with regards to this Pandemic. People are asking the questions, what can I do and what can’t I do? There is much confusion up and down the country. Health & Safety are of prime concern for everyone. For those who are vigilant, following the Governmental guidelines is extremely important; but even walking up the High Street it’s plainly seen that many of these guidelines are being flagrantly disregarded; and then people wonder why the virus continues to be spread. Our Health & Safety & Diocesan guidelines are quite stringent, and we have followed them very strictly. The Church is set up with a one-way system; hand sanitisation; wearing a face covering; social distancing; sanitisation of church after every Mass. I would like to thank all our parishioners for being so supportive and helpful in all these measures. As I’ve stated several times before, it’s far safer coming to church than going to the supermarket or a restaurant these days! See the source image

WEEKLY OFFERTORY: Unfortunately, this week our Offertory took a nose dive to £504.79; these are difficult times. I truly do appreciate your generosity week in and week out. We all have to cut our cloth accordingly these days and many people are struggling. I want to thank you all for your ongoing support through your Weekly Giving. During the past month we have had to pay our Annual Insurance on all our buildings which was £2,276.47. We also still have to pay our monthly Quota to the Diocese £2,230.00

APPLICATIONS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL PLACES FOR 2021: I would presume by now that all those who are applying for places in Secondary Schools for September 2021 have already completed their online application forms through Essex County. The cut-off date for applications is 31^st October; please ensure that all applications have been completed by this date.

FOR TRINITY CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL: A Certificate of Catholic Practice is necessary. This clearly states that you are a practicing Roman Catholic; both you and your child attend Weekly Mass. If you don’t meet this requirement the form cannot be signed, and you must make applications without the CCP form. Obviously, our churches opened again on the 4^th July for weekly mass. I have completed all the CCP forms and have forwarded them to Trinity Catholic High School. Parents, you will need to forward a copy of your child’s Baptismal Certificate to the School before 31^st October.

FOR DAVENANT FOUNDATION SCHOOL: The applications procedure is slightly different. They have an 11-page online applications form going into detail about their requirements. A Seven Year practice of faith is required. Once again, our churches opened on the 4^th July for weekly Mass. I would like a copy of what you recorded for your Weekly Practice please. (I have the relevant page (hard copy) for you to complete). In November the School will contact me with your application form. (I will not be signing application forms if I have not received your personal self-evaluation practice form in advance). So please be honest and truthful in your personal assessment of practice. I will not sign anything that is untruthful. If you are not a practicing Catholic, you will have to take your chances and make your applications without reference from me. The fact that children are now back at school, they should also be attending weekly mass.

ST. JOHN FISHER CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL: will not be offering any on-site tours to view our school this year. Instead we have prepared a virtual tour. Please visit our school website on www.st-johnfisher.essex.sch.uk (our admissions page is under the Statutory Info section). The virtual tour will give parents the opportunity to see what the school is like.

BAPTISMS: We have been given permission to resume the Baptism of infants in our churches. As of 28^th September, the Governmental guidelines have reduced the number of people present to 6 persons. Manifestly, this is very distressing to families who really want to celebrate this beautiful sacrament. I really don’t know how long this situation will continue, but the most important thing is that your baby is baptised. If this is your first child Sharon Chalk, our Baptism Catechist will meet with you, and go through the whole process of Baptism. It’s really amazing what can happen within a week. As you know, as of midnight Friday the new Government restriction came into place. London and Essex, and many other part of the country are now experiencing these measures once again! Yes, it may be frustrating and annoying, but Health & Safety always come first! With regards to the attendance at Church, according to Government & Diocesan guidelines we retain the Status Quo. Hand cleanliness and sanitisation, Social distancing, Face coverings, the cleaning and sanitisation of the Church after each Mass. Also please follow the Stewards directions. Obviously, this is something that we’re all going to have to learn to live with for the foreseeable future. Vigilance and attentiveness to other people is necessary for the non-spreading of this virus. Unfortunately, walking up the High Street and visiting the supermarket seeing the lack of social distancing and lack of face coverings, is quite disconcerting. Covid-19 is very real, and is not very nice if you contract it. We all probably know of someone who lost their life to this terrible disease, that’s why we need to preserve and promote all health and safety measures.

I approached our Diocesan Health & Safety Officer this week about the reopening of our parish hall. The Diocese have decided that there are so many stringent government rules and regulations attached to the opening of halls, that for the time being the diocesan policy is that they remain closed. This is extremely disappointing for our Uniforms Groups in the parish, who have worked so hard with the Scouting organisation in strategic planning for groups of children to meet. But the diocese has stated that outside of School Education of children we cannot gather in our halls. Unfortunately, this also means that we are unable to commence First Holy Communion & Confirmation Programmes, which I was hoping to do after Christmas. These are really unusual times, and we all have to employ as much patience as possible. I don’t know what ‘Normal’ is anymore. But let us see what happens over the next few weeks with these new measures in place!

LATEST GOVERNMENT GUIDELINES: Every week I receive updates to the latest situation re. Covid-19 guidelines. The Health & Safety Office at the Diocese of Brentwood has sent us a memo about the winter and the turning on of heating in our churches & parish halls; they are awaiting instruction from the Government, and within the next few days I should have a clearer indication as to what we will be able to do. In the meantime, as the temperatures slowly begin to decrease, I would suggest to all of our parishioners that you wrap up really well with a topcoat and scarf. The scientists have assured us that ventilation is vital and necessary with this virus being so virulent. We have good health & safety procedures in place at church.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: Our RCIA programme continues this week on Thursday 15^th October at 8.00pm Unfortunately, due to the latest Government guidelines we cannot meet together in the presbytery; therefore, there will be a Zoom meeting. Theme: Please pray for our enquirers. This programme is a systematic study of all aspects of the Roman Catholic Faith, with the view of the enquirer deciding to receive the Easter Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation & the Holy Eucharist. NOVEMBER – MONTHS OF HOLY SOULS: In the Catholic Church, November is traditionally the Month of the Holy Souls. It is when we remember in a very special way all of our deceased loved ones, relatives, friends and benefactors. There are November Deceased Envelopes available to parishioners, as you leave Church today. If you would like to remember your deceased loved ones, please make a list and place it in the envelope with your Mass Offering. Holy Mass will be offered each day throughout November for our Holy Souls; and a decade of the Rosary will be prayed at the end of each weekday mass, with the additional prayers for the deceased. FEELING A LITTLE APPREHENSIVE: About attending Sunday Mass; we have set up a Speaker outside the Church; and parishioners can practice Social distancing outside as well. Obviously if you attend as a family, you can sit closely together in the Church. Alternate benches have been blocked off, and with the wearing of Face Coverings we are complying with regulations.

TRINITY CATHOLIC HIG SCHOOL ADMISSIONS SEPTEMBER 2021:

In response to the COVID-19 situation and due to extraordinary circumstances this year, the school has commissioned a virtual tour of Trinity Catholic High School, which can be found on our website (https://fc.tchs.uk.net/). The school has taken this decision, not to expose our prospective parents to any unnecessary risks. The school realizes that you, as parents, may be disappointed with regard to this but please be aware that we only have the interests of the parents, and our school community, at the forefront of this decision, and would not wish to disadvantage any parents who may not feel able to attend. The website contains a lot of information regarding Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 teaching and the School Prospectus contains details of the life of the school. Please contact Mrs L Scrivens, Admissions Officer, on LScrivens@tchs.uk.net, if you have any further queries and this will be passed onto the relevant department.

The closing date for applications is 31st October 2020. Please note that applicants will need to complete a common application form which will be provided by their own Local Authority. This application will then need to be returned to the applicants own Local Authority. For applicants wishing to submit a Certificate of Catholic Practice, this Diocesan document can be obtained through your parish priest, on the Diocesan website or the priest who will be signing your form. You will also need to complete a SIF form which can be found on the Trinity website, under Year 7 – 11 Admissions.

Parents will be able to drop these documents off at the Sydney Road entrance in the drop box, not directly to the school office as visitors will not be allowed on site. Please contact the office via the buzzer on the gate to let them know that documentation has been left. Please provide a SAE if you require a receipt’. FOR TRINITY CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL: A Certificate of Catholic Practice is necessary. This clearly states that you are a practicing Roman Catholic; both you and your child attend Weekly Mass. If you don’t meet this requirement the form cannot be signed, and you must make applications without the CCP form. Obviously, our churches opened again on the 4^th July for weekly mass. CCP forms can be downloaded, please hand personally to Fr John after Sunday Mass this weekend 17/18^th October. The fact that children are now back at school, they should be attending weekly mass.

APPLICATIONS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL PLACES FOR 2021

If you have a child who is currently in Year 6 who is eligible to start Secondary School in September 2021, you need to seriously start thinking about the applications procedure. First and foremost, none of the High Schools are having open evenings this year but have published virtual tours of their schools online. The two schools that our parish tend to deal with are Trinity Roman Catholic High School & Davenant Foundation School. Before you make any applications please view the online presentations.

The applications procedure, especially if this is your first time, is through Essex County. It is an online procedure; you must complete the questionnaire application in detail by the 31^st October 2020. You will receive a registration number, which you can use to access the application form to change or alter any information up until 31^st October; after that date you will be locked out.

FOR DAVENTANT FOUNDATION SCHOOL: The applications procedure is slightly different. They have an 11-page online applications form going into detail about their requirements. A Seven Year practice of faith is required. Once again, our churches opened on the 4^th July for weekly Mass. I would like a copy of what you recorded for your Weekly Practice please. (I have the relevant page (hard copy) for you to complete). Please collect a copy of Weekly Practice for 7 years from Presbytery and return personally to Fr. John after weekend Sunday masses 17/18^th October. In November the School will contact me with your application form. (I will not be signing application forms if I have not received your personal self-evaluation practice form in advance). I can only attest to the truth in my 18 years here in the parish about your practice of faith. So please be honest and truthful in your personal assessment of practice. I will not sign anything that is untruthful. If you are not a practicing Catholic, you will have to take your chances and make your applications without reference from me. The fact that children are now back at school, they should also be attending weekly mass.

DIFFICULT DECISIONS: Obviously, parents know what the requirements are for applications into our faith school; namely the weekly practice of faith, this is nothing new; I will never compromise my personal integrity by signing a form that I know is not true. Twenty Eighth Sunday of the Year 2020

In these strange times, we have seen over the past week all the new measures that the Government is putting in place up and down the country. Local lockdowns; the closure of working establishments, pubs and restaurants; colleges and universities. The numbers are creeping up again, and more and more people are being admitted to hospital. Covid-19 is very real. Now that the winter is approaching rapidly, and the cold and flu season slowly manifests itself. Our medical services are going to be stretched to capacity. Being vigilant and attentive to the guidelines is vitally essential to abating this disease. It’s true some young people are asymptomatic, but it’ still a killer for some. We should constantly be mindful of others; sanitising, handwashing regularly, wearing face coverings, keeping a social distance. These are not too much to ask, but some people think that these measures don’t apply to them, hence endangering other people’s lives. This is the ‘new normal’. Yes, life has to be lived, and we can’t put everything on hold, but at the same time we need to be aware of others all the time. Our aim at St. Edmund’s is keep everyone safe and well. It’s wonderful that so many have returned to the practice of weekly faith. There is an additional mass on a Sunday Morning at 10.00am to assist with social distancing. The health and safety measures at Church are working extremely well; and with the assistance of the Stewards at each of the masses everything is running very smoothly. I have approached the Diocese this week, who in conjunction with Toolbox, are reviewing the possibilities of being able to open our Parish Hall on a limited basis. We are due a visit next week, and hopefully by next weekend I will be able to report a go-ahead date of opening the hall

Nothing can replace Sunday Mass. Livestreaming is not an alternative to Mass and receiving Holy Communion. If people are not in a vulnerable category, or have underlying health conditions, they should make every effort possible to return to the weekly practice of faith. From my observance outside, it appears people are far safer in church than in a supermarket or a restaurant. Please come home to the Lord and the practice of your faith. ADDITIONAL SEATING: Our Health & Safety Committee have managed to add some additional seating in the Church, and in the Library (just off the porch). I do ask all our parishioners to kindly follow the directions of the Stewards who will show you to your seats. Please move right into the benches; obviously families can sit close together in their ‘family bubble’, but please ensure social distancing wearing your face coverings. Also, for Holy Communion make sure there is a metre plus from the person in front of you as you process to the Altar. Thank you! My thanks to Iain McLay who has set up a speaker just outside the church. This will accommodate any overspill, and you will be able to hear very clearly. ADDITIONAL MASS: With the additional mass at 10.00am, the turnaround must be very quick; it is imperative that the cleaning of the benches takes place as quickly as possible after the 9.00am & 10.00am masses. Dear Friends in Christ

We have all seen this week the incredible measures that are being taken in various parts of the country because of an increase in those who are testing positive to Covid-19. This disease can spread so quickly, and many people’s cavalier attitude obviously has accelerated the spread of this disease once again. We are all encouraged to follow Governmental guidelines; no one is invincible, and this disease has killed 42 thousand people. Being vigilant is essential; practicing social distancing, hand cleanliness and sanitisation and wearing face coverings all can help in the prevention of transmission. We are constantly being bombarded by these recommendations, but still the virus spreads. Many people don’t know whether they are carriers of the virus or not. If we all take responsibility for ourselves and our families, the sooner this terrible virus will decrease. Let us continue to pray for all those who are sick through this pandemic. It has been so heartening to see many of our parishioners returning to the weekly practice of our faith by attending Sunday Mass. I have put on an additional mass at 10.00am to cater for numbers and to ensure that social distancing is maintained. The system is working extremely well in the church, and I’m truly grateful o our Health & Safety committee and our Stewards for all the help they give to ensure that everyone is kept safe and that our Church is sanitised after each Mass.

I had really hoped with the chidlren returning to school at the beginning of September, more of our parishioners would return to the practice of their faith. Sadly, this has not happened. Our Church is probably safer than a supermarket or restaurant. Livestreaming can never replace being physically present at Holy Mass and receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. Being away from church for over 100 days certainly took its toll on many people’s lives, both physically and spiritually. Statistically, perhaps some people have decided they don’t need to return to the practice of their faith; but the question we ask, is what replaces it? You can never quantify your relationship with God, because it’s about eternal life! St Mary Magdalene Yarm Church

AUTUMN & WINTER: With the change of seasons, people are preparing to switch on their central heating. Governmental guidelines still advise the circulation of fresh air in enclosed spaces. I seriously advise all parishioners to come to Church warmly dressed during this autumn and winter. Make sure you have a topcoat and warm clothing. We are doing everything to look after your health and safety. Windows will have to be opened at various stages for a through draft. An apology in advance if this causes any inconvenience.

BAPTISMS: We have been given permission to resume the Baptism of infants in our churches. As of 28^th September, the Governmental guidelines have reduced the number of people present to 6 persons. PARISH BAZAAR THIS YEAR? With the uncertainty regarding the Covid 19 Pandemic, I have made an executive decision not to have our annual Parish Bazaar this year. The Bazaar is our only & main fundraising event of the year and usually brings in several thousand pounds. Obviously these are difficult times. In response to the COVID-19 situation and due to extraordinary circumstances this year, the school have commissioned a virtual tour of Trinity Catholic High School, which can be found on our website (https://fc.tchs.uk.net/). The school has taken this decision, not to expose our prospective parents to any unnecessary risks. APPLICATIONS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL PLACES FOR 2021

If you have a child who is currently in Year 6 and is eligible to start Secondary School in September 2021, you need to seriously start thinking about the applications procedure. First and foremost, none of the High Schools are having open evenings this year but have published virtual tours of their schools online. The two schools that our parish tend to deal with are Trinity Roman Catholic High School & Davenant Foundation School. Before you make any applications please view the online presentations.

FOR TRINITY CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL: A Certificate of Catholic Practice is necessary. This clearly states that you are a practicing Roman Catholic; both you and your child attend Weekly Mass. If you don’t meet this requirement the form cannot be signed, and you must make applications without the CCP form. Obviously, our churches opened again on the 4^th July for weekly mass. CCP forms can be downloaded, please hand personally to Fr John after Sunday Mass on weekend 17/18^th October.

FOR DAVENTANT FOUNDATION SCHOOL: The applications procedure is slightly different. They have an 11-page online applications form going into detail about their requirements. A Seven Year practice of faith is required. Once again, our churches opened on the 4^th July for weekly Mass. I would like a copy of what you recorded for your Weekly Practice please. (I have the relevant page (hard copy) for you to complete). Please collect copy of Weekly Pracice for 7 years from Presbytery and return to Fr. John after weekend Sunday mass 17/18^th October. In November the School will contact me with your application form. I can only attest to the truth in my 18 years here in the parish about your practicing of faith. So please be honest and truthful in your personal assessment of practice. I will not sign anything that is untruthful. If you are not a practicing Catholic, you will have to take your chances and make your applications without reference from me.

DIFFICULT DECISIONS: Obviously, parents know what the requirements are for applications into our faith school. I will never compromise my personal integrity by signing a form that I know is not true. Please read both schools Admissions Criteria. You can also find relevant information on the Diocesan Website regarding admissions. The Priests’ guidelines are mapped out very clearly by the diocese.

Dear Friends in Christ

As a priest it is truly wonderful to be able to celebrate Holy Mass for the community, not only at weekends, but every day! It is the most important thing that any priest will do in his priestly ministry, and it can never be underestimated how important the Holy Mass is for every Roman Catholic Christian. We have all been encouraged to return to the weekly practice of our faith. The reality is that life is not going to return to Pre-Covid, and we now must adapt our lives accordingly and live with this situation. We cannot put our lives on hold! The reality is that this could go on for a couple more years. Life will not be the same, but we must live! All the negativity through the press and media doesn’t inspire anyone; but if we all act sensibly, and take the precautions necessary, we can get on with our daily lives. Being conscious and aware of others is important. Practicing Social Distancing, the wearing of Face Coverings, washing and the sanitisation of our hands, receiving the Flu Vaccine where necessary, these are all precautionary measures in not only protecting ourselves, but everyone else as well. After each of our masses at weekends and during the week the Church is cleaned and sanitised. Our schools returned three weeks ago. The Government is doing everything conceivably possible to ensure that our schools remain open. The fact that schools have retunred should be an incentive for families to return to our places of worship. I appeal to every parishioner in our community to retunr to your church. If you are not vulnerbale or have an underlying health condition, please ‘come home’! We all need God in our lives; and live-streaming is all well and good, but it’s not a substitute for receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. We need to get back into the habit once again. OCTOBER. THE MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY: I advocate that every family take up the Rosary during this special month, and pray every day for an end to this Corona virus Pandemic. The Rosary is a very powerful prayer, and the invocation of Our Blessed Lady is a powerful intercession. Parents teach your children the Rosary during October. There are a number of rosaries for sale in the Parish Repository in the porch of the Church; there is an explanation of how to pray the rosary with each. You can always Google the instructions how to pray as well.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: Each year the RCIA programme – often referred to as the Journey of Faith – is open to anyone interested in learning more about the Roman Catholic Faith. It offers the enquirer the opportunity to explore in a systematic way all the aspects of Catholicism. Our next session will take place on Wednesday30th September at 8.00pm inn the Presbytery. BAPTISMS: We have been given permission to resume the Baptism of infants in our churches. Manifestly, families are allowed up to 30 persons to be present in the Church, practicing Social distancing and wearing a face covering. Many baptisms were put on hold with the lockdown. But I would encourage you to have your babies baptised now. The Church is open for weekly Sunday Mass, and we are trying to get back to some semblance of normality. BAPTISMS IN THE PARISH: If you have a child due for Baptism please let me know as soon as possible. To avoid any disappointment with dates, contact the Presbytery to book your date. If you are first-time parents, you need to contact Sharon Chalk, who will organise a Baptismal Preparation of two sessions, and then I will come and visit you in your homes. Please don’t forget to collect your Baptismal Information Form.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION: The last two children will celebrate First Eucharist on Sunday this week. This is a special time for the children, who have been preparing since last September. It’s extremely important that all those children and their families who are preparing to receive their First Holy Communion in the coming weeks start attending weekly mass once again. REPOSITORY: There are a variety of Religious gifts and items available for First Communicants. Cards, statues, rosaries, medals, prayers books, candles There is a cash box to leave your money. The church is open from 10.30am – 11.30am each day Monday – Saturday.

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION FOR HOLY COMMUNION & CONFIRMATION: As you know were only just celebrating First Holy Communion for our children (postponed from May). The likelihood is that we will begin our Communion Programme & Confirmation Programme after Christmas. I have spoken to the Catechists, and they are in agreement with this. (Our Bishop Alan is supposed to make a Pastoral Visitation in 2021 celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation). Please keep an eye on the newsletter for details.

Dear Friends in Christ

Once again it was wonderful to see so many people returning to Sunday Mass. With our children returning to school, and families trying their best to maintain some semblance of normality during these difficult times, it is imperative that our lives of faith should also continue with the practice of weekly faith. It was wonderful to have been able to live-stream, literally from day one, but as Cardinal Sarah, Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, said last weekend, with the Holy Father’s approval, it is “necessary and urgent” to return to in-person Masses as soon as coronavirus lockdowns permit. I think we would all agree with this sentiment. Unfortunately, negative reporting doesn’t help; it has evoked an atmosphere of fear and anxiety in many people. If we are sensible, following Governmental guidelines, practicing social distancing, washing our hands regularly, using sanitisers, wearing face coverings, manifestly this will assist in helping to protect everyone. Sadly, not everyone adheres to these guidelines. It has been noted statistically that the highest rate of transmission at present in now in the younger age groups. The ‘rule of 6’ is there to protect us.

As the autumn and winter months rapidly approach, and as colds an winter flu emerge, its so important that our Senior Citizen get their flu vaccine as soon as possible. Scientifically it has been observed that the wearing of face coverings and the washing and sanitising of hands will certainly decrease the likelihood of catching colds and flu, let alone Covid 19. STAY ALERT! Obviously, of late, many people have lowered their guard, hence the increase of cases.

As you know the Church has been open since 4^th July; many parishioners have returned to the weekly practice of faith. But many have not, especially families. With the return to school, I would like to encourage our families to come back to church. I sent a letter out a couple of days ago ‘COME BACK TO ME’, and hope you’ve had a chance to read it. We have employed every measure possible to ensure the safety of all our parishioners. Keep Safe & Well!

‘COME BACK TO ME’ SAYS THE LORD

Dear Friends in Jesus Christ,

I am writing this letter to all our parishioners; all our lay faithful and all in our schools’ communities. To everyone of good will, and to anyone searching for God, and to all who seek to know his Son Jesus Christ. I say to all of you: Come Back! Come back to Mass! Come back to Church for private prayer! Come and visit Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament! You are always welcome – we have missed you!

These past six months have been extraordinary! This pandemic has caused great harm, physically, mentally, emotionally and financially. Sadly, many have fallen sick and some have lost their lives. At the same time our medical staff and key workers have responded incredibly with unconditional generosity and courage. We have learnt to become creative in live-streaming which has taken place from day one. Keeping in touch with our parishioners through WhatsApp, online Newsletters, Phone calls. I have attended the Hospital several times in end-of-life situations celebrating the Last Sacraments. Now our schools, colleges & Universities and many others are returning to work; we must keep up this good work. Let us all keep safe and well. And let us pray to the Lord for an ending to this pandemic, the invention of a vaccine and the restoration of ordinary life.

I take this opportunity of truly welcoming back the many parishioners who have already returned to Weekly Mass. I’m also very aware that many parishioners may still be very nervous about returning. Some are still self-shielding, the sick & vulnerable. Moreover, I am aware that the infection-rate is varying, and there may even be the possibility of facing local lockdowns. For everyone this requires care, prudence and adjustments. As the autumn and winter rapidly approaches, rather than focusing on what we cannot do, let us focus on what we can do, so that the great mission of the Church can continue to move forward, and that the Gospel of Jesus Christ may continue to be preached.

Ultimately, this pandemic has shown us how fragile life can be. We cannot become complacent. It has caused us to review our priorities. For 14 weeks our churches were closed; there was no public celebration of Holy Mass, we have had to face our own mortality and the question of God. I know many people felt bereft of the Sacraments, and especially in receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. Many have followed Mass online and spoke of their hunger and thirst for the Lord. Online has its place; but nothing can replace being present with the worshipping community and receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. ‘Come back to me!’

This is the reason why I invite all of you to: Come back to the Lord to be nourished by his Word & His Sacraments. We have adapted the Church to meet all Governmental & Diocesan guidelines; social distancing, hand sanitisation, face coverings, etc. Sadly, few families have returned to weekly mass, even though the children have returned to full-time education. Please seriously consider your return to the practice of your weekly faith with the worshipping community. The church has now been opened for ten weeks. Jesus said: “The sheep that belong to me listen to my voice, I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27)? What about his promise: “Anyone who eats my flash and drinks my blood lives in me and I in him” (John 6;56)? What about his invitation: “Come follow me” (Mark 1:7)? His offer: “I have come that you may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10)? Surely, we do not follow Jesus our Lord and Master simply out of habit or duty? No, we follow Him because we love Him. We follow Him because He has called us by name. We follow Him because He is our Saviour. He gave His life for us.

May Our Lord & Our Blessed Lady, our patrons St. Edmund of Canterbury & St. Thomas More, pray for you and protect you. May they obtain for you freedom from fear. May they inspire in you a generous response to the Lord’s call – Come back to me!
