TO THE PEOPLE OF ST EDMUND OF CANTERBURY and ST THOMAS MORE PARISH, LOUGHTON

Dear Friends in Christ,
As we continue our Journey through this Lenten Season, you receive our Weekly Newsletter encouraging you all in the disciplines of Lent.
You may have been following all the News Reports about the success of the Vaccine in the United Kingdom, and how we are further advanced than the whole of Europe in the numbers of persons who have already been vaccinated.  Speaking to many of our parishioners who have received their first ‘jab’, it has really given them a deep sense of security and of course hope for the future.  As I shared with you a couple of weeks ago advice from two scientists that I had spoken to, and this has been confirmed recently in the press and the news, the first jab is giving up to 85% to 90% protection against Coronavirus. This is truly a wonderful advancement in science over the past twelve months.
Locally the numbers of people catching Coronavirus has drastically decreased, and we are now below  average in this particular locality. With the return our our children to school next Monday, it is hoped that this will be the final lockdown. Obviously, the Government is erring on the side of caution and that’s why there are 5 weeks in between each opening of the public sectors.
Throughout this Pandemic, our prime concern here at St. Edmund’s has always been the Health & Safety of everyone who walks through the doors of the Church. Every single parish has been affected by the absence of so many of the faithful at Church. People have spoken about the desire to return to normal, whatever normal is, but many people are still frightened.  I personally want to reassure all of our parishioners here at St. Edmunds that we have taken every single precaution necessary in accord with Government, Public Health England & Diocesan Guidelines to ensure the safety of everyone. We have followed a track & trace scheme since we opened last July, and not one case has been reported in that period of time; we request hand sanitisation as you enter and leave the Church; We ask that you follow the Stewards directions to your seats and at the distribution of Holy Communion; It is Law to wear face masks in enclosed buildings; we have ensured that there is plenty of ventilation in the Church before, during and after each Mass & Service; The Church is sanitised by the stewards after each communal celebration. I would like to thank our team of Stewards who have made it possible for our Church to remain open.
As our numbers have been increasing again over the past couple of weeks, our people are returning, I will be reintroducing the additional 10.00am Mass on a Sunday morning. Last weekend our 11.00am Mass reached full capacity, and some people were standing outside the Church. I never want to turn anyone away from Holy Mass, that’s why I’m reintroducing the 10.00am Mass again.   I invite all of our parishioners to seriously think about attending Holy Mass, especially if you’ve been absent over the past twelve months. Therefor Sunday Masses are as follows:  Vigil Mass on Saturday evening at 6.00pm. Sunday Morning Masses 9.00am, 10.00am & 11.00am. Please consult your Parish Newsletter weekly for Times and Intentions of all masses, and all the special Lenten Services. Thank you!
May God Bless You All; and my continued thanks for your generous support an upkeep of the parish, especially during this Pandemic.
Fr. John

Second Sunday of Lent 2021, Year B

St. Edmund of Canterbury & St. Thomas More

Dear Friends in Christ  ,
https://coronavirus.delaware.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/177/2020/11/vaccine-yoast-fb.png

The daily reports from the PrimeMinister are striking a more optimistic tone these days. The the number of people in the UK receiving the vaccine has toppped 19 million, and hopefully, fewer and fewer people are dying in hospital; the situation here appears to be much brighter now. But remaining attentive and still observing social distancing, the wearing of face coverings and hand sanitisation are still vitally essential to maintain good practice in protecting everyone from the spread of this terrible disease. If you get the opportunity to have the vaccine please don’t refuse it, and don’t listen to conspiacy theories, protect yourselves, and as Her Majesty the Queen said the other day, protect other people as well. As the experts tell us, the vaccine, even in the first jab, is giving up to 85% to 90% protection, The second jab will top that up. It may be that we have to live with this virus for years ahead and have to receive the jab as same as the flu vaccine each year. Imagine having to vaccinate the whole world, 7.8 billion people!

I have spoke to a number of doctors and nurses recently who are on the frontline fighting this terrible disease; they are beginning to see the light and the end of the tunnel. Day in and day out they have put their own lives at risk in the service of the public. They truly are the real heroes in this Pandemic. I can only stand in admiration or them all. May God bless them and protect them in their chosen vocation of care for the sick

I would like to invite all of our parishieorns to seriously consider coming back to the regular practice of faith. Live-streaming is all well and good, but it cannot replace being together as community, and receiving Jesus in Holy Communion. As you are aware stringent safety measures are in place at our church, and the Stewards ensure your ongoing safety with social distancing and the strict cleaning of the church after each Mass and Service. Our gratitude and thanks is extended to the great service they show to the whole community. Always in times of difficulty, the best is manifested in the human spirit!

Dear Friends in Christ:                                    Second Sunday of Lent,Year B

In the Holy Gospel today, Jesus invites Peter, James and John to accompany him up the mountain. In their presence he is transfigured. Thomas Aquinas considered the transfiguration “the greatest miracle” in that it complemented baptism and showed the perfection of life in Heaven. The transfiguration is one of the five major milestones in the gospel narrative of the life of Jesus, the others being baptismcrucifixionresurrection, and ascension. In 2002, Pope St John Paul II introduced the Luminous Mysteries in the rosary, which includes the transfiguration. http://etc.usf.edu/clipart/65400/65437/65437_transfigurat_lg.gif

Giving the Apostles a glimpse of future glory, not only was a unique moment for them, but it also affirmed once again the Father’s love for the Son; those powerful words ‘Listen to Him’ should echo in our own lives of faith. There are so many voices out there today vying for our attention, that it is so easy to miss the voice of the Lord himself. Our Lenten Season gives us a wonderful opportunity to take out and ‘listen’ to what the Lord is saying to each one of us on our journey of faith

HOW IS YOUR LENT? We’re just about to begin the second week of Lent. Have you managed to stay faithful to the resolutions that you made on Ash Wednesday? It’s so easy to fall by the wayside very quickly. But that doesn’t mean that we have to give up. Lent can be a truly positive experience; a time of growth and understanding of the Lord Jesus. We have to remember where this journey is leading us; ultimately to the greatest event this workd has ever known. Jesus Christ, who died on Good Friday, rose triumphantly on Easter Day. Sin and death was conquered; and the Lord invites each one of us personally to share in that New Life, which we call our Catholic Faith. How we prepare for that is up to us. No one can do this for us. Prayer, Fasting, Works of Charity are all well and good, but if there is no real intention behind them it becomes only lipservice. Conversion-Change of Heart is what the Lord calls each one of us to.https://webstockreview.net/images/lent-clipart-fasting-2.jpg

SET YOURSELF LITTLE TARGETS: Morning and Evening Prayers; Reading a passesge from the Bible; Attending an additional Mass during the week; Attending Holy Hour; Praying the Stations of the Cross; Praying the Rosary, or even a decade of the Rosary each day; reading a chapter of a spiritual book (see our parish Library). My dear friends, you can chose any of these throughout the week. But please don’t let this Lent pass you by.
Fr

May God Bless You All,

CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME 2021: Our third session in the Confrimation Programme will be streamed Via ZOOM on Wednesday 3rd March. We are using the Sycamore Programme, and it’s  imperative that you attend each session. If anyone missed the first two session, could you kindly catch up with the material.  A few practical notes; you will be notified of the meeting by Mark Anthony the day before our meeting. Whichever email you submitted to Fr. John & Mark Anthony should be maintained throughout the programme, because your email addresses have been fed into the programme so we can break you up into your groups. If you intend using another e.mail you must let us know immediately. At each session of the programme you will be registered present. If you are unable to be present at a particular session through sickness please get a parent to contact Fr. John directly.  I would once again encourage parents of our candidates to be present at the sessions. It shows how we conduct the programme, but will also be a great support to your son or daughter. In our Catechists Meeting after the session it was discussed that all Candidates should kindly make themselves visibly present, and not just have a blank image only with your name. And kindly refrain from using your phone for texting during the session. We only have a little over an hour for each session, and have to cover a lot of material.https://w0.pngwave.com/png/844/892/web-conferencing-computer-icons-meeting-internet-meeting-png-clip-art.png

THIS WEEK’S TALK: The Power of Prayer – Prayer is our lifeline with God. It’s very personal and involves making an effort to give a few minutes each day. To be quiet and still in the presence of God; to be open to listening to God, in sharing with God what is in your heart, your worries and anxieties, your joys and blessing, these are all positive ways of praying. How and where you do this is up to you. It would be tragic to think that you might go through a day and not give a thought to God, or about your relationship with Jesus, especially as you’re preparing for this Sacrament of Confirmation.   http://cliparts.co/cliparts/pi7/dX8/pi7dX8Mi9.jpg

This is truly a wonderful time in a young person’s life. It’s when you personally make a decision about your ongoing life of faith. Basically, it’s about becoming a young mature adult. The decisions that we make in our lives will always affect the future for all of us. The decision to be Confirmed in Faith is no exception to that rule. It affects the decision to marry in the future; to become a committed Catholic Christian; to assume our rightful place within the life of faith and the Church. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/4d/15/f7/4d15f748aeb8cb4cfe2d74b49f4e508e.png
http://clipground.com/images/mass-clipart-5.jpg

BEING PRESENT AT HOLY MASS: For many centuries, our one obligation as Roman Catholics has been to be part of the worshipping community by attending Sunday Mass. The Eucharist, is the ‘source and summit’ of the Life of Faith. It’s the most important thing we do as Catholic Christians, and bears witness to our commitment. I notice many are already attending, but sadly some I haven’t seen for the past year. Our presence at Holy Mass is not only our personal witness to Christ and our faith, but also affords us the grace that we need to become really strong young Catholics in the Church today. Why not try to make an extra special effort during Lent?

The Sacrament of Confirmation is the Sacrament of Mission. Think of the first Apostles, who at Pentecost received the gift of the Holy Spirit, empowering them to, ‘Go out into the whole world and procalaim the Good News.’ The Catechism tells us that we become a Soldier of Christ at Confirmation.

OUR NEXT THEME IS – THE POWER OF PRAYER

All Candidates have now received a Copy of the Programme with dates and times etc. Please ensure that you start to check in about 7.20pm for each session, so that we can start on time at 7.30pm. Hopefully this will help to avoid any technical hitches

All Zoom sessions will be attended by at least two adults – Mark Anthony and Fr John.  Where break-out rooms are used, each of these will be attended by an adult catechist and these will be monitored by Mark Anthony and Fr John.  For all sessions, the following guidelines must be followed:

• No 1:1s, groups only

• Catechists and children must wear suitable clothing, as should anyone else in the household.

• Any computers used should be in appropriate areas, for example, not in bedrooms; and the background should be blurred, if possible.

• All Zoom sessions will be set up with a password, to reduce the chance of hacking. Candidates should be visibly present, and not just a blank screen with your name on it

• Language must be professional and appropriate, including any family members in the background.

• The catechists will record, the length, time, date and attendance of any sessions held.

With continued thanks for your generosity.Fr

God Bless You All      Fr. John

FINANCIAL SITUATION IN THE PARISH: You may have noticed that the Weekly Offertory, on some occasions, is extremely low. Obviously, we are all experiencing financial issues during this Pandemic. Some parishioners have reverted to online giving since last year. Others have opted to join the Parish Gift Aid Scheme, and are using Direct Debit weekly/monthly payments. I would say that the Weekly Offertory has probably dropped by a half over the past twelve months. Manifestly we have to cut our cloth accordingly. I would like to thank all of our parishioners for your ongoing support of the parish and all its buildings. There is no other income, other than your weekly contribution. Thank you One and All!  http://morethankyounotes.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Donation-Thank-You-Card.png

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION PROGRAMME 2021: There has been little response this year to applicants for the First Holy Communion Programme. I have spoken at length to Kathryn Poulter who runs the programme; and in light of the Coronavirus restrictions at this present time, it is going to be almost impossible to run any kind of meaningful interactive programme for the children. We considered the prepration for the Sacraments of Reconciliation & the Holy Eucharist far too important to run a programme with no engagment from the children. Therefore, we will postpone the Programme this year until we know when it is safe to gather again as a community. I know this may sound very disappointing; but your Health & Safety are our first priority at this very difficult time.  Please pray for all the families of our Parish. Thank you. Fr. John.

EPPING FOREST FOODBANK DONATIONS: Thank you to all parishioners who continue to generously donate items for the Foodbank during these difficult times. The Foodbank are truly grateful for the generosity our parish has shown throughout the pandemic and our donations are still needed desperately as more and more people in our community are finding it hard d to make ends meet. Basic staple items are always welcome including the unbranded supermarket basic ranges which can make your generous donations go even further. Currently they are in urgent need of the following items: tinned fruit, tinned ham, tinned carrots, sponge puddings, chocolate bars, Nutella, toilet rolls (2 or 4 pack), washing up liquid, laundry tablets/powder and shower gel. Thank you! You can also keep up to date with

the Foodbank via their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/EppingForestFoodbank/

REQUIESCAT IN PACE: In your mercy please pray for the Repose of the Soul of Patricia Gardener RIP, who passed away recently. Her Requiem Mass will take place on Wednesday 10th March at 12.15pm. We extend our condolences to her family in this time of great loss. May she rest in peace.

CAFOD LENTEN FAST DAY COLLECTION: Last Friday 26th February was Cafod Lenten Fast Day. Abdella lives in an extremely remote and mountainous part of Ethiopia. It takes him ten hours a day to collect water. He says his life is being wasted as he has no time for anything else. Please give today to reach vulnerable communities around the world with water and to provide other vital support. Donate online at cafod.org.uk/give or by using one of the envelopes available with this newsletter or as you leave the church. You can also give easily via text. Text LENT to 70460 to donate £10 https://www.underconsideration.com/brandnew/archives/cafod_logo_before_after.png

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Lent is a Penitential Season – which means that every Catholic should avail themselves of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We all need to celebrate Christ’s forgiveness, Confession and Penance. This has always been a spiritual custom during the Special Holy Seasons of the Year. Not one of us is perfect, and our faults and failings can mount up over a period of time. The Sacrament affords us the opportunity to be released from the burden of sin, to be free or those things which create barriers between ourselves and Almighty God. I will be hearing Confessions throughout the weeks of Lent on various different days, please try to prepare for Easter by celebrating the Sacrament. Thank you!https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.TEWrufmxjCV_nHW1mR-bFgHaMu&pid=Api&P=0&w=300&h=300

SACRAMENTS CELEBRATED DURING ALERT LEVEL 4 RESTRICTIONS: In accordance with Government & Diocesan Guidelines, we are allowed to celebrate Funerals with 30 people present, strictly observing social distancing. 12 people are allowed to be present at a wedding. Baptisms are allowed to take place in the context of a Sunday Mass setting. These are really difficult times, and many couples were disappointed last year not being able to celebrate their marriages. We are hoping with the advent of the vaccine, that things will change dramatically this year. If there are any couples who are thinking about getting married, please notify the parish immediately. Thank you.

2nd Sunday of Lent

First Reading : Genesis 22:1-2,9-13,15-18

God put Abraham to the test. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he called. ‘Here I am’ he replied. ‘Take your son,’ God said ‘your only child Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There you shall offer him as a burnt offering, on a mountain I will point out to you.’

When they arrived at the place God had pointed out to him, Abraham built an altar there, and arranged the wood. Then he bound his son Isaac and put him on the altar on top of the wood. Abraham stretched out his hand and seized the knife to kill his son.

But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven. ‘Abraham, Abraham’ he said. ‘I am here’ he replied. ‘Do not raise your hand against the boy’ the angel said. ‘Do not harm him, for now I know you fear God. You have not refused me your son, your only son.’ Then looking up, Abraham saw a ram caught by its horns in a bush. Abraham took the ram and offered it as a burnt-offering in place of his son.

The angel of the Lord called Abraham a second time from heaven. ‘I swear by my own self – it is the Lord who speaks – because you have done this, because you have not refused me your son, your only son, I will shower blessings on you, I will make your descendants as many as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore. Your descendants shall gain possession of the gates of their enemies. All the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by your descendants, as a reward for your obedience.’

Responsorial Psalm : Psalm 115(116):10,15-19

I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

I trusted, even when I said:

  ‘I am sorely afflicted,’

O precious in the eyes of the Lord

is the death of his faithful.

I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

Your servant, Lord, your servant am I;

  you have loosened my bonds.

A thanksgiving sacrifice I make;

I will call on the Lord’s name.

I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

My vows to the Lord I will fulfil

  before all his people,

in the courts of the house of the Lord,

      in your midst, O Jerusalem.

I will walk in the presence of the Lord in the land of the living.

Second Reading : Romans 8:31-34

With God on our side who can be against us? Since God did not spare his own Son, but gave him up to benefit us all, we may be certain, after such a gift, that he will not refuse anything he can give. Could anyone accuse those that God has chosen? When God acquits, could anyone condemn? Could Christ Jesus? No! He not only died for us – he rose from the dead, and there at God’s right hand he stands and pleads for us.

Gospel : Mark 9:2-10

Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain where they could be alone by themselves. There in their presence he was transfigured: his clothes became dazzlingly white, whiter than any earthly bleacher could make them. Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Then Peter spoke to Jesus: ‘Rabbi,’ he said ‘it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He did not know what to say; they were so frightened. And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; and there came a voice from the cloud, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved. Listen to him.’ Then suddenly, when they looked round, they saw no one with them any more but only Jesus.

As they came down from the mountain he warned them to tell no one what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. They observed the warning faithfully, though among themselves they discussed what ‘rising from the dead’ could mean.

First Sunday of Lent 2021, Year B

Dear Friends in Christ                               First Sunday of Lent 2021

The Latest Statistics with regards the Covid situation in our country appear quite promising, but as the Prime Minister has stated, ‘we must proceed with caution’; the last thing we want to do is to come out too quickly from the lockdown, and within a few weeks find ourselves in a worse situation once again. Unfortunately, at times the way things are reported through the media, we are often presented with the worst case scenario, hence conspiracy theories about the vaccine, and the injection of microchips into the recipients, or altering our DNA. This peddling of misinformation undermines the incredible work that our scientists have done over the past year in producing a vaccine so quickly. You may have seen the recent TV promotion of the vaccine and the positive nature of its effects on the whole of our society dispelling these myths and conspiracy theories. This week I spoke to two scientists, one of whom works with Covid 19; they spoke about the effective nature of the first jab given to nearly 17 million people now; three weeks after the jab it should give up to 85% to 90% protection from the virus. Obviously, there are variants emerging all the time, and the scientific laboritoiries are working around the clock to address these variants. This should give us a great deal of hope for the future, and the returning to some semblance of normality by the end of the year. https://coronavirus.delaware.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/177/2020/11/vaccine-yoast-fb.png

The incredible safety guidelines that we have employed here at St. Edmund’s has certinaly been very effective during this Pandemic. The track & trace system hasn’t flagged up a single person over the past several months. This is thanks to our wonderful Stewards and helpers who have kept the Church spotlessly clean after each Mass and Service. I re-iterate once again the health and safety measures we have in place are there to protect each person who comes through the doors of the Church. Could I make a special appeal to the whole parish community; if you haven’t been coming to Church to seriously consider returning to the practice of faith. With the R level dropping rapiidly, many people are resuming their other daily tasks, such as Grocery Shopping etc. We are here for you! https://cdn1.vectorstock.com/i/1000x1000/45/10/stay-healthy-and-safe-slogan-concept-vector-30704510.jpg

Dear Friends in Christ:                                            First Sunday of Lent,Year B
http://paintingandframe.com/uploadpic/others/big/temptation_of_christ.jpg

On this First Sunday of Lent we are presented with Our Lord’s temptations in the wilderness. Jesus has just been baptized by John, and now the spirit drives him out into the desert for 40 days and nights. He doesn’t succumb to the temptations of the devil; this test prepares him for the beginning of his Public Ministry where he will proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God and the repentance from sins. This Lenten Season takes up this important message, which still has as much relevance today as it did when Lord shared it so long ago.
https://webstockreview.net/images/lent-clipart-fasting-2.jpg

How we personally enter this Holy Lenten Season is up to each one of us. The greatest tragedy would be to allow these weeks to pass by and not truly enter into the spirit of this Penitential Season. Even during this Pandemic we can practice the various disciplines of Lent. Personal Prayer: Morning and evening prayers; praying the Rosary; praying the Stations of the Cross; praying the scriptures; attending an additional Mass during the week; attending Holy Hour with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Fasting: is very personal to each individual. Some may decide to give up some food or alcohol luxury throughout Lent. But this sacrifice one day a week is a good way of associating ourselves with Our Lord during Lent; He gave up everything for us, including his life. Works of Charity: For example next Friday 26th February is CAFOD Lenten Fast Day – whatever we save we donate to Cafod. Works of charity are many and various:- keeping and eye on elderly relatives and neighbors, especially during lockdown; doing shopping for people unable to get out; helping our parents at home; providing items for the Foodbank weekly. Even during this Pandemic – we can enter into the spirit of this Lenten Season.

Please try to attend our Weekend Masses: Saturday Vigil Mass at 6.00pm. Sunday Masses at 9.00am & 11.00am. If there are parishioners who still feel apprehensive attending a Weekend Mass, there is the opportunity of coming during the week, where there are fewer people in the Church. We should all attempt to make an effort in one way or another. Livestreaming can never replace being present with the Community and receiving the Sacrament of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist

May God Bless You All,

MAKING LENT REALLY PERSONAL: Spiritual Reading has always been a part of our Christian Heritage. Lent is a wonderful opportunity for us to develop our expanse of spiritual literature and insights. Every spiritual book gives us a perspective on Jesus Christ from the life of the writer. At present I’m reading a wonderful Book called The Consecration to St. Josephe by Donald Calloway; In this Year of St. Joseph, designated by Pope Francis, it gives a truly wonderful perspective on Joseph’s role in the whole of God’s plan of Salvation, not only as the husband of Mary, but the only man singled out by God to be the earthly Father to his Son. There are so many wonderful books out there at present; all you have to do is consult the internet for current Catholic literature.

CAFOD LENTEN FAST DAY COLLECTION: Next Friday 26th February is Cafod Lenten Fast Day. Abdella lives in an extremely remote and mountainous part of Ethiopia. It takes him ten hours a day to collect water. He says his life is being wasted as he has no time for anything else. Please give today to reach vulnerable communities around the world with water and to provide other vital support.

CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME 2021: Our third session in the Confrimation Programme will be streamed Via ZOOM on Wednesday 24th February.

This programme is your opportunity to learn a lot about your faith, and also to prepare spiritually for the Sacrament of Confirmation. It’s so important that you engage in the programme, and not just keep your screens blank, which is quite rude to those who are leading each group. If you are talking to a friend, you wouldn’t expect to talk to a blank screen. Please make a contribution in your groups, this will not only be of benefit to you, but to the rest of the group also. I also encourage paretns to be present with your chidlren. This will be of great benefit to you also, and shows support and encouragement to your son or daughter.

In addition, if you are able to attend Holy Mass, (and we have three on the weekend), please kindly do so. I notice many are already attending, but some I haven’t seen for the past year. Our presence at Holy Mass is not only our personal witness to Christ and our faith, but also affords us the grace that we need to become a real strong young Catholics in the Church today. As Roman Cathooic the Holy Eucharist & attendance at Holy Mass is the most impoortant thing we can ever do as a witness to our faith. Try to make an extra special effort during Lent.

OUR NEXT THEME IS – JESUS CHRIST

SACRAMENTS CELEBRATED DURING ALERT LEVEL 5 RESTRICTIONS: In accordance with Government & Diocesan Guidelines, we are allowed to celebrate Funerals with 30 people present, strictly observing social distancing. Thank you. Obviously until restrictions are lifted all of the above applies for the foreseeable future. http://infantjesus.org/home/images/articles/2016/sacraments/sacraments_-_clipart-_-150x200.png

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT, YEAR B

First Reading : Genesis 9:8-15

God spoke to Noah and his sons, ‘See, I establish my Covenant with you, and with your descendants after you; also with every living creature to be found with you, birds, cattle and every wild beast with you: everything that came out of the ark, everything that lives on the earth. I establish my Covenant with you: no thing of flesh shall be swept away again by the waters of the flood. There shall be no flood to destroy the earth again.’

God said, ‘Here is the sign of the Covenant I make between myself and you and every living creature with you for all generations: I set my bow in the clouds and it shall be a sign of the Covenant between me and the earth. When I gather the clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the Covenant between myself and you and every living creature of every kind. And so the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all things of flesh.’  The Word of the Lord – Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 24(25):4-6,7b-9

Your ways, Lord, are faithfulness and love for those who keep your covenant.

Lord, make me know your ways.

  Lord, teach me your paths.

Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:

for you are God my saviour.

Your ways, Lord, are faithfulness and love for those who keep your covenant.

Remember your mercy, Lord,

and the love you have shown from of old.

In your love remember me,

because of your goodness, O Lord.

Your ways, Lord, are faithfulness and love for those who keep your covenant.

The Lord is good and upright.

He shows the path to those who stray,

He guides the humble in the right path,

He teaches his way to the poor.

Your ways, Lord, are faithfulness and love for those who keep your covenant

.

Second Reading: 1 Peter 3:18-22

Christ himself, innocent though he was, died once for sins, died for the guilty, to lead us to God. In the body he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life, and, in the spirit, he went to preach to the spirits in prison. Now it was long ago, when Noah was still building that ark which saved only a small group of eight people ‘by water’, and when God was still waiting patiently, that these spirits refused to believe. That water is a type of the baptism which saves you now, and which is not the washing off of physical dirt but a pledge made to God from a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has entered heaven and is at God’s right hand, now that he has made the angels and Dominations and Powers his subjects.  The Word of the Lord  –  Thank be to God

Gospel : Mark 1:12-15

The Spirit drove Jesus out into the wilderness and he remained there for forty days, and was tempted by Satan. He was with the wild beasts, and the angels looked after him.

After John had been arrested, Jesus went into Galilee. There he proclaimed the Good News from God. ‘The time has come’ he said ‘and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe the Good News.

Beaver Scout Leader needed.

The 7th Epping Forest Scout Group has an upcoming vacancy for a Beaver Scout leader. We are looking for someone to manage and lead our great team of volunteer adults who help to run our term time weekly Beaver Colony of 6–8-year olds. A typical week may involve simple task setting, helping our Beavers achieve their award badges, helping to organise and coordinate craft activities, organising outdoor activities, indoor games and of course, the much-loved Beaver camps. Good communication skills are needed as you will be liaising with parents and other Scout section leaders within our Group.  Basic administration skills are required to keep weekly records up to date. Being one of the Scout Leaders at St Edmund’s is a rewarding role. We have many experienced leaders within our group, some of whom were Scouts themselves back in the day.  By joining us you will be part of a valued group of leaders who give the children in our Group the knowledge and chance to learn valuable skills for life. If you want to have an amazing life experience and volunteer in your community, please call James Geller on 07554 456844.  Volunteering with us is easier than you think, full support and training is given.

THE HOLY SEASON OF LENT 2021

Programme for Lent 2021

Dear Friends in Christ,

As Ash Wednesday approaches, and the Holy Season of Lent begins once again, we are alll very much aware of the events of the past year and how the World-wide Pandemic has affected every household and community. We have expereinced three lockdowns over the past eleven months. Many have lost their lives to Covid-19, many have been sick. A whole new world-order has emerged. The one ray of light on the horizon is the vaccine. Slowly and gradually many are now reciving the vaccine for protection against this terrible disease.  Perhaps the past year has helped us to focus our attention on God. During The Holy Season of Lent the Church gives us the opportunity to focus our minds, and really enter into the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. These next several weeks will help us to prepare for the greatest event of human history; that at a moment in time Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, was able to triumph over sin and death. We are invited to share in this mystery, and especially during this Lenten Season. See the source image

I would ask every single parishioner to seriously think about your commitment in faith, especially in light of the Pandemic. Ask youselves the important questions of whether you have been true to your faith; to the commitment in faith; to the practice of faith; to the sharing of faith with your family; to personal prayer; to stewardship; to works of charity. I truly believe the Church now has the greatest challenge in the life of faith due to the Pandemic; this is now a universal issue, and perhaps this Lenten Season will give us those opportunities to address all these issues.See the source image

The disciplines of Prayer, Fasting & Alms Giving are key to the Holy Season. How we respond to these is personal. Why not make an extra special effort this year to really enter the spirit of Lent? Whatever you decided to do is between you and Almighty God. Please don’t let the Holy Season of Lent pass you by and ignore opportunity to get closer to the Lord.

May God Bless You All during this Holy Lenten Season

Sixth Sunday of the Year 2021, Year B

Dear Friends in Christ

As we have approached that time of year twelve months ago when the first cases of the Corona virus hit the United Kingdom, so we look back and see the incredible response by the NHS. I’m sure we’ve all seen on our TV’s the incredible pictures of Nurses and Doctors working so hard, to save lives, and the emotional responses when lives are lost. Obviously this has a dramatitc psychological effect on everyone involved in the daily care of those who are dreadfully sick. As we approach the 15 million mark for those who have been vaccinated, all we can do is hope and pray that this will provide the protection that we need against this terrible disease. People are still very frightened to go out even after the vaccine; you do have a great deal of protection against getting very sick and having to be hospitalised. But you still need to practice hand hygeine and sanitisation, continue to wear a face covering, and also practice social distancing. It is going to take many months to get the whole country vaccinated, and also for people to have their second jab. Let us look after and care for each other.https://coronavirus.delaware.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/177/2020/11/vaccine-yoast-fb.png

The mental health and emotional well being of many has been profoundly affected by this Pandemic. Depression, anxiety, domestic worries, have touched the lives of many people young and old. The genuine care we take in looking after one another is extremely important. Being aware when someone starts to show signs of remoteness and isolation are key indicators that attention should be paid to the situation. People are genuinely frighthened, and sometimes all we need is the reassurance from family and loved ones. No one should ever feel completely alone. We all  desire a time when we can look back on this Pandemic, and gain some semblance of normal living once again. We are social animals, and many have talked about the lack of social contact as the worst aspect of this disease. As we enter into Lent, let us earnestly pray for the end of this Pandemic.  https://news.umiamihealth.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2020/03/TT-Stay-Healthy_facebook.png

Dear Friends in Christ:                                                   Sixth Sunday of the Year,B

In the Gospel today we see the miraculous healing of the man with leprosy. In Our Lord’s time there was no cure for leprosy, so the fact that a man is cured visibly is a sign of great rejoicing. It would have been customary for the cured individual to have to present themselves before the priests as a testament for the cure. The man is so overjoyed at his healing that all he wants to do is publicize his cure. Of course this will draw great attention to Jesus. In St. Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus performing many miracles as a sign of the Kingdom of God being present among his people. The fact that Jesus touched the man; in those days you would have kept as far away as possible from anyone with leprosy. Jesus showed his love and compassion in the most extreme circumstances, and of course the Glory of God is manifested.   https://spiritualfoodforthesoul.files.wordpress.com/2018/02/38056f4d9d4c7a30b49366e999394ea4.jpg

ASH WEDNESDAY: 17th February, marks the beginning of Lent. There will be three Holy Masses with the distribution of Ashes. 10.00am, 12.15pm & 8.00pm. Due to the Pandemic the distribution of Ashes will be very different this year. We will be using the Italian custom. The Ashes will be blessed with the sprinkling of holy water – the words “remember you are dust and to dust you shall return”, will be addressed to the people.

At the end of the Mass after the final blessing, the Priest will then cleanse his hands put on the face mask and visor; each recipient comes forward in the same manner as you would approach Holy Communion, and a small portion of the sacred ashes will be sprinkled on your head without any words being spoken. There will be no hand to head contact. Then kindly leave the church. These procedures have been given the approval by Public Health England in accord with the Divine Congregation for Divine Worship. https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.AY8mcLFfx2rww0ae5xjs3gHaE8&pid=Api&P=0&w=259&h=174

All Candidates have now received a Copy of the Programme with dates and times etc. Please ensure that you start to check in about 7.20pm for each session, so that we can start on time at 7.30pm. Hopefully this will help to avoid and technical hitches

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS: Our RCIA programme continues Thursday 25th February 2021 at 8.00pm which will be a Zoom meeting. Theme: PRAYER – Why we need to Pray – Methods of Prayer. Please pray for our enquirer. SACRAMENTS CELEBRATED DURING ALERT LEVEL 5 RESTRICTIONS: In accordance with Government & Diocesan Guidelines, we are allowed to celebrate Funerals with 30 people present, strictly observing social distancing. Thank you. Obviously until restrictions are lifted all of the above applies for the foreseeable future.http://infantjesus.org/home/images/articles/2016/sacraments/sacraments_-_clipart-_-150x200.png

Words cannot express my gratitude; the Holy Mass is the greatest gift I can give to you, and I do it with heartfelt love & thanksgiving. SIXTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR 2021 Year B, Mark’s Gospel

SUNDAY MASS READINGS

First Reading: Leviticus 13:1-2,44-46

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ‘If a swelling or scab or shiny spot appears on a man’s skin, a case of leprosy of the skin is to be suspected. The man must be taken to Aaron, the priest, or to one of the priests who are his sons.

‘The man is leprous: he is unclean. The priest must declare him unclean; he is suffering from leprosy of the head. A man infected with leprosy must wear his clothing torn and his hair disordered; he must shield his upper lip and cry, “Unclean, unclean.” As long as the disease lasts he must be unclean; and therefore he must live apart: he must live outside the camp.’

Responsorial Psalm:

Psalm 31(32):1-2,5,11

You are my refuge, O Lord; you fill me with the joy of salvation.

Happy the man whose offence is forgiven,

  whose sin is remitted.

O happy the man to whom the Lord

  imputes no guilt,

in whose spirit is no guile.

You are my refuge, O Lord; you fill me with the joy of salvation.

But now I have acknowledged my sins;

my guilt I did not hide.

I said: ‘I will confess

  my offence to the Lord.’

And you, Lord, have forgiven

  the guilt of my sin.

You are my refuge, O Lord; you fill me with the joy of salvation.

Rejoice, rejoice in the Lord,

  exult, you just!

O come, ring out your joy,

all you upright of heart.

You are my refuge, O Lord; you fill me with the joy of salvation.

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1

Whatever you eat, whatever you drink, whatever you do at all, do it for the glory of God. Never do anything offensive to anyone – to Jews or Greeks or to the Church of God; just as I try to be helpful to everyone at all times, not anxious for my own advantage but for the advantage of everybody else, so that they may be saved. Take me for your model, as I take Christ.

Gospel: Mark 1:40-45

A leper came to Jesus and pleaded on his knees: ‘If you want to’ he said ‘you can cure me.’ Feeling sorry for him, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him. ‘Of course I want to!’ he said. ‘Be cured!’ And the leprosy left him at once and he was cured. Jesus immediately sent him away and sternly ordered him, ‘Mind you say nothing to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and make the offering for your healing prescribed by Moses as evidence of your recovery.’ The man went away, but then started talking about it freely and telling the story everywhere, so that Jesus could no longer go openly into any town, but had to stay outside in places where nobody lived. Even so, people from all around would come to him.

Fifth Sunday of the Year 2021, Year B

St. Edmund of Canterbury & St. Thomas More

Dear Friends in Christ

As we have reached over a hundred & ten thousand deaths from the Coronavirus in the UK since the beginning of the Pandemic; in spite of over ten million vaccinations, there are still people who are very sick in the Covid Wards in our hospitals on ventilators fighting for thieir livies. Our hearts go out to families who have lost their loved ones thtrough this terrible disease, and to those who are vigilent with sick ones still in hospital. The scientific experts have informed us that thingss are slowly beginning to improve, but sadly, there will continue to be deaths until the whole country in vaccinated. Obviously, this is an unknown quantity for the whole world; and the fact that scientists all over the world have managed to formulate several vaccines in such a short space or time is a marvel in itself.https://coronavirus.delaware.gov/wp-content/uploads/sites/177/2020/11/vaccine-yoast-fb.png

I have spoken to a lot of people over the past several weeks, and there are many who have found the past 12 months an absolute nightmare. Many are suffering from anxiety and depression. Being locked down on three separate occasions has certainly taken its toll on many. Some people handle things better than others. Obviously, families have found it difficult juggling their work from home, and child care and on line education. Many feel inadequate to be teachers as well as trying to hold down their employment from a back bedroom in the house. The stresses and strains it puts on the human spirit are enormous. Ultimately, the preservation of life is one of the strongest and innate human responses in times of trial and threat to life. Certainly, our faith can help us; at times, we never really know why God allows things to happpen in our world, and perhaps some have questioned this during the Pandemic, but to keep faith is a sign of strength and trust, even in the darkets moments.https://news.umiamihealth.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2020/03/TT-Stay-Healthy_facebook.png

I have spent a lot of time speaking with families of deceased loved ones of late; but if there is anyone at all who just needs to talk privately and confidentially, just call me. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I have a good listening ear. Tel No: 020 8508 34492. Fr. John

Dear Friends in Christ:                                                   Fifth Sunday of the Year,B

At the house of Simon Peter, which was literally a stone’s throw from the Synagogue in Capernaum. We are introduced to his mother in law who is sick with a fever. We know very little about Peter’s family other than his brother Andrew. Having preached in the Synagogue and cast out a demon, now Jesus assists and restores her to full health. Jesus didn’t want to be seen as some kind of magician or wonder worker. Something much more profound was to be understood in Jesus’ activities. The point of his miracles is pastoral and messianic. In other words, salvation has come to all in the person of Jesus Christ, extending far beyond physical cure, encompassing the entire person, body, soul and spirit. He bent over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. – Slide 5

The world today in so many ways is still gripped with fever and sickness. We are caught in the grips of a devastating pandemic. Today many are plagued too with the fever of intolerance and hatred, injustice and war, slavery and addiction in so many forms. No less than at the time of Jesus, the world today needs the powerful cure which only Christ can give, freedom from what is not of God. The goal is to belong completely to God’s Kingdom and to share in the eternal life being offered to all people, rich and poor, young and old alike.

The Ashes will be blessed with the sprinkling of holy water – the words “remember you are dust and to dust you shall return”, will be addressed to the people.https://tse3.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.xexlFd3m057xveJX7YseyQHaIX&pid=Api&P=0&w=300&h=300

May God Bless You All,

CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME 2021: Our second session in the Confrimation Programme will be streamed Via ZOOM on Wednesday 10th February. We are using the Sycamore Programme, and it’s imperative that you attend each session. THE THEME THIS WEEK – THE EXISTENCE OF GODhttps://static.dribbble.com/users/1353252/screenshots/11485906/zoom_call_4x.jpeg

If anyone missed the first session, could you kindly catch up with the matrial. We only have a little over an hour for each session, and have to cover a lot of material.

We ask of all our candidates for total commitment to the programme. None of this will make any sense whatsoever if you’re not genuinely committed. As the Late Pope St. John Paul II, said on his pastoral Visit to the UK back in 1982 of our young people: “In the Church of today, you are the hope of tomorrow.” http://www.emmanuelwimbledon.org.uk/Images/content/1683/464336.jpg

CRIB COLLECTION: Each year is for the Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society. They do incredible work up and down the Diocese with thousands of children and their families. As you can appreciate most of the Aid Agencies over the past twelve months have been unable to fund-raise due to the Pandemic, so this annual Crib Collection is extremely important. For those who Gift Aid, there should be a Special Envelope in your boxes for Crib Collection on 2nd February. If you wish to use the online Banking System to make a Crib Offering just use the Heading Crib BCCS. You are extremely generous every year, could I make this extra special appeal this year under these difficult circumstances. My thanks to Iain McLay & Martin Laffey for the beautiful Crib outside the church. It was visited by many people passing by, which is a great witness to the faith and the Christmas Story.  https://static.vecteezy.com/system/resources/previews/000/074/861/original/cartoon-nativity-vector.jpg

HOLY SEASON OF LENT: I know we are barely out of the Christmas Season, but each of the Liturgical Seasons of the Year help to prepare us for the great events in the Life of Our Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ. Sadly, last year, we locked down during Lent & Easter. Hopefully, we will be able to remain open this year. Manifestly, we will have to be attentive to Governmental Guildelines. Ash Wednesday is on 17th February. I would presume that this lockdown will continue to be in place. But there will be various different ways that each one of us can enter the Lenten Season. Please continue to refere to the Parish newsletter and I will give you a whole programme for Lent 2021. With thanks, Fr John.

5 SPIRITUAL WAYS TO STAY ACTIVE DURING LOCKDOWN:

a) Let there be a spiritual structure to your day: Morning & Evening Prayers on your own or with your family are important. Personal prayer is our lifeline with God.

b) Reading a chapter of the Bible each day from the Old or New Testament’s keeps you in touch with the Word of God.

c) Spiritual Reading – There are many spiritual Books in our Library at the back of the Church

d) Pray the Rosary or learn to pray the rosary – This is a really beautiful prayer and it really does help to focus our prayer life.

e) Attend an additional mass each week. Holy Mass is the most important spiritual thing we do as Catholics – It unites us with Christ and one another.

SACRAMENTS CELEBRATED DURING ALERT LEVEL 5 RESTRICTIONS: In accordance with Government & Diocesan Guidelines, we are allowed to celebrate Funerals with 30 people present, strictly observing social distancing. 12 people are allowed to be present at a wedding. Fourth Sunday of the Year 2021, Year B

St. Edmund of Canterbury & St. Thomas More

Dear Friends in Christ                             Fourth Sunday of the Year 2021

As the Universal Pandemic continues, and as we listen daily to the various implications and consequences of this situation, we have seen the emergence this week of another vaccine, that hopefully will assist in protecting more and more people from this terrible disease. Health & Safety will always remain the top priority for everyone. As more and more people are receiving the vaccine, manifestly this will have the knock-on effect of reducing the number of people being admitted to hospital. But obviously, we wont see the benefits of this for another few weeks. Sadly, this past week we peeked at a hundred thousand deaths in the UK. Every single one of these people came from a family, and there are literally hundred of thousands of people grieving at this time. I spent the largest part of the past two weeks talking to families who’ve lost loved ones. Because people are so isolated, even from their own family members, it’s very hard when you’ve lost a loved one, and there’s very little personal support because of isolation and social distancing. Just being able to listen to loved ones talking about their deceased family member is very humbling. Please pray for all who have lost loved ones recently.https://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.d3UDVOr7mU0IVqZFALTkogHaE8&pid=Api&P=0&w=233&h=156

I would like to personally thank the many parishioners who have so kindly sent messages and letters & cards about contintuing to provide Masses to the Faith Community. A beautiful card I received during the week talked of the open Church as a ‘life-line in this darkest of times.’ To be able to come in and pray, and light a candle, and also to be able to attend Holy Mass, has been a real source of strength and support to so many. The fact that we are able to contiune to be able to celebrate Funeral Masses, compared to last year when we could only conduct a grave-side service, is a blessing and grace in itself. As you know we follow strictly Governmental & Public Health England & Diocesan Guidelines. Our Health & Safety Officer has checked and approved all the safety measures we have in place, and have given approvel. The Church is open for Mass every day and at weekends, but it is up to the individual as to whether they attend or not. I can assure you, Church is a safe space.https://tse3.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.WvPxmxtbzJOWxeNOE48nvwHaE8&pid=Api&P=0&w=275&h=184

Dear Friends in Christ:     Fourth Sunday of the Year,B
https://www.christianforums.com/data/attachment-files/2017/10/262269_cfaf53747821a5f6378e6c0159cdb812.jpg

Today we see Jesus in the Synagogue at Capernaum; when he is presented with what people at that time considered possession, Jesus completely takes control, and ‘with authority’ releases the man from his infirmity. The words ‘with authority’ have real power behind them. Where does this authoriity come from? Of course, it comes directly from God. That’s why Jesus had such an effect and recognition from the people. But at the same time, it agitated the religious leaders, because they were never able to achieve such faith, in the same way the people believed in the Lord.  We have to constatnly remind ourselves who Jesusis, the Son of God; his authority comes directly from the Father, and he never doutbs in what the Father can do in and through him.

These of course, are powerful lessons in faith in our own time also. In an age that is far less conscious of the sacred and divine; in a age of scepticism and cynicism; in an age of apathy and indifference; we have to truly be strong in faith. Faith in God, faith in Christ Jesus, faith in the Church, are the means whereby the Lord continues to reveal himself in the world of the twenty-first century. A take-it-or-leave-it attitude, or Cafeteria style religion is not true Catholicism; total commitment and a desire for understanding in faith are the key constituents of a life lived in Christ. These are not pious sentiments, they are important facts and realities about the life of faith as it can be lived today; It’s up to you if you want to live that life!

May God Bless You All,

CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME 2021: My grateful thanks to all our Confirmation Candidates who tuned in via ZOOM last Wednesday for the beginning of our Confirmation Programme for 2021. After a few technical hitches, we were able to conduct the session resonably well. My thanks to Mark Anthony our Porgramme Director, and also our Catechists who helped in this new venture.Confirmation Welcome Visitors Our Church Greetings - Sacrament Of Confirmation Word Clipart - Full Size Clipart (#1263314) - PinClipart

Our next meeting will take place via ZOOM on Wednesday 10th February at 7.30pm. A few practical notes; and you will be reminded of these prior to the meeting. We only a little over an hour each session, and have to cover a lot of material.https://static.dribbble.com/users/1353252/screenshots/11485906/zoom_call_4x.jpeg

The Programme we use is called Sycamore. It was created by Fr. Stephen Wang, who features throughout the programme. Fr Stephen is Chaplain to London University. It is an engaging programme and will give the Candidate a lot to think about over the next several months in preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

The one thing we ask of all our candidates is total commitment to the programme. None of this will make any sense whatsoever if you’re not genuinely committed. In addition, if you are able to attend Holy Mass, (and we have four on the weekend), please kindly do so. I notice many are already attending. Our presence at Holy Mass is not only our personal witness to Christ and our faith, but also affords us the grace that we need to become a real strong young Catholics in the Church today. As the Late Pope St. John Paul II, said on his pastoral Visit to the UK back in 1982 of our young people: “In the Church of today, you are the hope of tomorrow.” http://www.emmanuelwimbledon.org.uk/Images/content/1683/464336.jpg

All Candidates will have now received a Copy of the Programme with dates and times etc. Please ensure that you start to check in about 7.20pm for each session, so that we can start on time at 7.30pm. Hopefully this will help to avoid and technical hitches

• Language must be professional and appropriate, including any family members in the background.

• The catechists will record, the length, time, date and attendance of any sessions held.

If you wish to use the online Banking System to make a Crib Offering just use the Heading Crib BCCS. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION PROGRAMME 2021: There has been very little response this year to applicants for the First Holy Communion Programme. I have spoken at length to Kathryn Poulter who runs the programme; and in light of the Coronavirus restrictions at this present time, with the virus raging out of control, it is going to be almost impossible to run any kind of meaningful interactive programme for the children. Thank you. Fr. John.

SACRAMENTS CELEBRATED DURING ALERT LEVEL 5 RESTRICTIONS: In accordance with Government & Diocesan Guidelines, we are allowed to celebrate Funerals with 30 people present, strictly observing social distancing. 15 people are allowed to be present at a wedding. If, after the lockdown (March 8th), the numbers increase again, I will reintroduce it. Thank you!

Third Sunday of the Year 2021, Year B

Dear Friends in Christ

As the Pandemic continues all around the world; not to sound lik e some broken record, I would like to reiterate that my one main concerm throughout this situation has always been the Health & Safety of every single person. From the outset of the Pandemic, the Sunday Obligation was lifted with regards to attending Sunday Mass. As you know there have been various lockdowns, and the Church remained closed for 18 weeks in total. As the Scientists and Experts have got to learn more about the virus, so our response has changed. In this present lockdown according to Governmental, Public Health England & our Diocesan Guidelines, places of worship are allowed to remain open for Services & Private Prayer. The decision to attend Holy Mass is ultimately yours. We have complied with all the Governmental recommendations witih reagrds to Hand Sanitisation on entry & exit of the Church; Following the One way System both on entry & exit & the distribution of Holy Communion; The Mandatory Wearing of Face Coverings, which is now Law; the Track & Trace completion of infortmation dockets as you enter the Church (please leave your soiled pens in the buckets provided). Social distancing is maintained, alternate benches have been cordoned off. The Church is disinfected after each service; PPE is available for all of our Stewards, who have volunteered for this great Service to the whole community. Please aquaint yourselves with these guidelines. Manifestly, there are fewer people attending the Church at this time. As I conclude every Mass – Keep Safe & Well. https://tse4.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.cz9kUO4-1qj64LCP16X0IAHaEK&pid=Api&P=0&w=286&h=162Safety Book Stock Illustrations – 4,510 Safety Book Stock Illustrations, Vectors & Clipart - Dreamstime

Obviously, with the Vaccine being offered to those who are 70 and upwards, hopefully this will have a dramatic effect and reduction in numbers having to to be admitted to Hospital. Please continue to pray for all those working on the Frontline; they’re all being stretched to the liimits, and the emotional strain it is putting on everyone’s lives is most definitely showing. Let us continue to pray earnetly for an end to this Pandemic. Ultimately, it is always God who is in control. https://understandingcompassion.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Dear-God-please-put-an-end-to-the-coronavirus-1024x536.jpg

My Dear Friends,

Last Monday 18th January at 10.10am we lost our dear Mary Walstow at St. Clare’s Hospice, where she had been for three weeks. There have been some wonderful tributes paid to Mary since her death and it is clear that she was truly loved by the whole parish community. Mary lived in Loughton all her life; and examining the Baptismal registers, Mary’s was the third Baptism in the Parish after it was established back in 1926; a truly long history! Many of you have known Mary for such a long time, and her total dedication to the Parish of St. Edmund’s is unquestionable. Daily Mass was the highpoint of her day; and I would suggest if anyone wanted to do something special in remembrance of Mary, it would be to have Mass celebrated for her. There are deceased Mass Cards in the Repository.  Mary very kindly ran the Sacristy for many years, and in gratitude of that she was awarded the Bene Merenti Medal for Service to the Church back in 2009. Mary continued to serve the Church in all sorts of different ways even after she retired from the Sacristy. She had boundless energy, and people were often surprised when they learnt how old she was. Over the past 18 months, she was suffering a little, but it stop her coming daily to Holy Mass, even if at times she didn’t feel a hundred percent. I know she found the past year very difficutl with Covid. It was only in October last year that she stopped driving. Mary lived a good long life, happy with her lot in life. She now enjoyes her eternal reward in heaven. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. AmenC:\Users\User3\Downloads\HR_POV0138.jpg

Mary’s Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday 16th February at 12.15pm. Her remains will be brought into St. Edmund’s on Monday 15th February at 4.30pm. (perhaps some may like to attend the reception of the Body – We will pray the Holy Rosary).  Unfortunately, during this Pandemic only 30 people are allowed to be present at the Funeral. There will be about 8 family and close friends, and the rest will be parishioners, most of whom have known Mary many decades.  With the help of Social Media I will livestream the funeral mass, and if anyone would like to pay a personal tribute to Mary, please congregate in the Church Car Park at approximately 12.55pm. Please wear your face coverings and ensure social distancing thankyou! There will be Family Flowers only; any donations should be made to St. Clare’s Hospice.  Fr

CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME 2021: A very big thank you to all of our Young People who have made application to enrol in the Sacrament of Confrimation. Much to my surpirse we have 44 applications. I found this very inspiring and hopeful!Confirmation Welcome Visitors Our Church Greetings - Sacrament Of Confirmation Word Clipart - Full Size Clipart (#1263314) - PinClipart

If I haven’t got your email address, you will not have received these details. Each time you sign in with Zoom please kindly register your presence. If you are unable to be present through sickness, kindly speak to Fr John directly. Mr Mark Anthony is our Programme Director, and I will also assist Mark in the Programme.  I would encourage the Paretns of our Candidates to also be present for the sessions. It not only shows support to your son or daughter, but will also afford you the oportunity of importance and power of this Sacrament which has been requested by your child. Dear Friends in Christ

As I stated to you last week, in light of this Pandemic, every day there is a new story to tell. Over the past week we have heard of the largest number of cases of Coronoavirus in the UK since the Pandemic began. They have exceeded last year’s numbers at this time; and the number of deaths is now approximately eighty seven thousand. This is extrmely frightening! It was vitally necessary for this lockdown to take place, and for everyone to take heed of the warnings set before us daily. But sadly, there are still those who think they know better, and are endangering other people’s lives by flagrant disregard of the law, and for others. Conspiracy theories still abound. Keeping safe, is staying at home, unless you have to go out, or have to work outside the home. As difficult as self-isolation is, the health and safely of every individual should be at the top of our list of priorities. Let us pray for a speedy delivery of the vaccine over these coming months. See the source image

SECOND SUNDAY OF THE YEAR: St John’s Gospel today shows us how St. John the Baptist recognises Jesus as the ‘Lamb of God’; this evokes in two of the disciples the desire to knlw more about him. Jesus’ response to their question, ‘where do you live?’ has echoed down through the centuries of time; ‘Come and see’, is the invitation that is extended to each one of us also. It’s an invitation to share in the life of Jesus Christ at the most intimate level; to really know him, to grow in love of him and to serve him. This is a clear description of what it truly means to be Christian – one who is like Christ. As the Gospel continues, we see Adrew introduce his brother Simon to the Lord – Simon is renamed by Jesus to Peter, the rock, on which Jesus will build the Church. Already we see Jesus’ work of evengelisation beginning and the seeds of the new Church slowly emerging. There will be an incredible journey for each of the Aposltes; it will be an incredible journey of faith leading to eternal life! That is also the journey of every Chrsitian committed in faith to Christ.https://tse4.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.guFMUIrSWP007FdBrdTgNAHaDp&pid=Api&P=0&w=326&h=161

My Dear Friends,

Week by week for the past ten months we have listened daily to the news of this Pandemic. This week we learnt that two million people world wide have lost their lives to this terrible disease. Every single one of these people came from a family, and those families are hearbroken at the loss of their loved ones. Some of our own parishioners have lost family members, and we extend our sincere condolences to them. We are all feeling the affects of this Pandemic; our third lockdown. Many people feel isolated and scared. We cannot go anywhere at present; there is no travel or holiday plans afoot for most people. Planning for the future is somewhat limited, until we know how the vaccine is going to impact on the whole of society. Our NHS has been stretched to its capacity; each doctor and nurse and care worker is a human being, and to witness on the TV the emotional stress and exhaution these professionals are experiencing is truly heartbreaking. But each day they get up and go back to work and do it all over again! These are the real heroes during this Pandemic. We can only stand in admiration of them. https://media.istockphoto.com/vectors/rainbow-coronavirus-vector-id1222731210?k=6&m=1222731210&s=612x612&w=0&h=qV50-V7pX6m3PePMmQ8cbaH0EydFjsVHJuRNSVuECRk=

Health & Safety, has always been at the top of the list, as far as I am concerned. In accord with the Governmental & Health Advisory Boards we continue to enjoy the facility of keeping our Churches open. They have recognised that our Health & Safety measures are so stringent, and that they are there to protect each person who enters our Churches. The incredible work of our Stewards over the past several months has been a wonderful example of not only service to the community, but the selfless action of parishioners whose faith is enbling us to remain open and the celebration of daily Mass. For many who are sick & housebound, the facility of being able to live-stream our masses on a daily basis and at weekends, has been a lifeline. This is a not of reassurance to all parishioners, that we will continue to place Health & Safety at the top of the list of priorities. As I have said the whole way through this Pandemic, it’s probably far safer to attend Church than making a visit to the Supermarket.     Safety Book Stock Illustrations – 4,510 Safety Book Stock Illustrations, Vectors & Clipart - Dreamstime

May God Bless you All,

CONFIRMATION PROGRAMME 2021: A very big thank you to all of our Young People who have made application to enrol in the Sacrament of Confrimation. Much to my surpirse there were 44 applications. I have sat down and read every single application; some were only a sentence or two, but others were very thoughtful personal reflections on the Sacrament and what it means to the young person. I found this very inspiring and hopeful!

The Sacrament of Confirmation in the Diocese of Brentwood is for Young People 14 years upwards. It is a decision that the young person should come to as individuals, but with the support of their faithful family. Obviously, teenage years can be challenging in all sorts of different ways, and to actually come to decision about receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, is very much a mature decision not only of commitment in faith, but also about their future lives as practicing Catholics. I was so delighted recently when a young man said to me that he wanted to be Confirmend in his faith, because he wanted to be married in the Catholic Church. Obviously, he had thought very seriously about the meaning of the Sacrament and its consequences. In some of the letters, our young people talked of how their lives of faith were growing, especially as they were beginning to understand more fully the meaning and signigificance of all of the Sacraments. Others talked about wanting to make a deeper commitiment to Jesus Christ.Confirmation Welcome Visitors Our Church Greetings - Sacrament Of Confirmation Word Clipart - Full Size Clipart (#1263314) - PinClipart

The Late Pope St. John Paul II, said on his pastoral Visit to the UK back in 1982 that our young people: “In the Church of today, you are the hope of tomorrow.” These words still apply; you young people are our hope of tomorrow. To be strong in faith and bearing witness to Jesus Christ through your young and enthusiastic lives, gives inspiration to us all!  I share with you another beautiful quote from Pope St. John Paul II: “It is Jesus you seek when you dream of happiness; he is waiting for you when nothing else you find satisfies you; he is the beauty to which you are so attracted; it is he who provokes you with that thirst for fullness that will not let you settle for compromise; it is he who urges you to shed the masks of a false life; it is he who reads in your hearts your most genuine choices, the choices that others try to stifle. It is Jesus who stirs in you the desire to do something great with your lives, the will to follow an ideal, the refusal to allow yourselves to be grounded down by mediocrity, the courage to commit yourselves humbly and patiently to improving yourselves and society, making the world more human and more fraternal

I have had a long discussion with our Director Mark Anthony with regards to the commencement of the Confirmation Programme this year. Our Bishop was due to have come on a Pastoral Visitation at the beginning of March, but I don’t think this will be happening this year; and, we would never have been able to get a Programme completed by then. Manifestly, with the situation regarding Covid-19 raging throughout the country at present and with Schools closed and online learning taking place; we have decided that the Programme will commence through Zoom; First Session: will take place on Wednesday 27th January 2021 at 7.30pm. You will need to consult the Parish Newsletter for the Zoom Link on each occasion we meet. There is a registration for each meeting. Obviously, this is not what anyone of us would have wanted, but Health & Safety are of utmost importance. We don’t want to rush the programme, it’s far too important; and with the vaccination programme having been initiated, hopefully by the summer most people will have been immunised, and we can return to some semblance of normality once again. We ask you to kindly be patient; even if it means being Confirmed much later in the year; the most important thing is that you will receive the Sacrament. As many of you are now off School, could I recommend that you Google the Sacrament of Confirmation, and find out as much as you can about the Sacrament. I hope most people have access to laptop or desk top computer. The more knowledge you have the better.  JW Digital Clipart Zoom Meeting Cartoon Clipart | Etsy

We would request all of our Young People to join us weekly for Holy Mass; our churches are still permitted to remain open. Even if we’re locked down, we can make that extra special effort to tune in through social Media to our on-line masses. It shows commitment and seriousness about the Sacrament.  We would also like to ask our young people to really think seriously about the Sacrament of Confirmation that you’re preparing for. Think of the different ways you can personally bear witness to your Catholic Faith over these next months. Are there things that you can do personally? Involvement in the life of faith and the church is not exclusively for older people. The life is faith is something that can be active. Think about ways in which you can truly put into action your Christian values and principles. Confirmation is the Sacrament of Mission – which is something active! Contact Us - Love In Action Outreach

Finally, could I ask all prospecitive candidates to kindly forward their e.mail addresses as soon as possible please. With thanks.  Parents, please wncoruage your son/daughter to read this item in the Parish Newsletter.

For those who Gift Aid, there should be a Special Envelope in your boxes. You are extremely generous every year, could I make this extra special appeal this year under these difficult circumstances With grateful thanks. As you can see we have two beautiful Cribs this year, and there are collection Boxes at each of them. They will remain until 2nd February, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.   https://hopeumcia.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/kids-nativity.jpg

God Bless You All

Fr. John

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION PROGRAMME 2021: There has been very little response this year to applicants for the First Holy Communion Porgramme. I have spoken at length to Kathryn Poulter who runs the programme; and in light of the Coronavirus restrictions at this present time, with the virus raging out of control, it is going to be almost impossible to run any kind of meaningful interactive programme for the children. Thank you. Fr. John.

Hoepfully, we will be able to remain open this year.

DIOCESAN YEAR BOOK: Is now available for purchase from the Parish Repository. It cost £2.80.  It really is worth investing in a Yearbook, as it gives all the latest details of parishes, priests’ addresses, statistics, general information about the Catholic Faith and the Church. PLEASE BUY ONE!

PARISH REPOSITORY: Has a large selection of Religious items; gifts for baptisms; Medals, Statues, Religious books for children, Mass cards for all occasions, Bibles, Prayer Books, and many other items. If there is something that would specifically like to order please see Teresa Wallace or Fr. John. Our thanks to those who purchased various Christmas items this year; especially Cribs and Advent Calendars. The Christmas stock has now been removed. Thank you to Teresa for keeping the Repository so well stocked for all occasions.

Thank you. Obviously until restrictions are lifted all of the above applies for the foreseeable future.   http://infantjesus.org/home/images/articles/2016/sacraments/sacraments_-_clipart-_-150x200.png

EPPING FOREST FOODBANK DONATIONS: Thank you to all parishioners who continue to generously donate items for the Foodbank during these difficult times. The Foodbank are truly grateful for the generosity our parish has shown throughout the pandemic and our donations are still needed desperately as more and more people in our community are finding it hard to make ends meet.
